🌱 Prairie Leaf Experiment Update: Alugbati (Malabar Spinach)

This has been one of the strangest plants in our grow room.

The leaves are still showing significant chlorosis, yet the plant continues to grow aggressively. One vine has now reached the ceiling and started growing horizontally across support strings, while additional side branches continue to develop.

Usually you’d expect a plant that looks like this to be struggling. Instead, this one seems determined to take over the room. 😄

Have you ever grown alugbati before?

The grow room is getting a little crowded. 🌱

A few months ago, Prairie Leaf was just a couple of small hydroponic bins. Now the Kang Kong is filling the room and even an alugbati vine has started exploring on its own.

It’s exciting to see everything getting bigger and fuller each week!

Kang Kong grows really fast and loves to send out random exploratory vines, which try to find more light or new water to root in.

We built a little bridge for a few vines to connect them to adjacent bins. This one vine is now almost five feet long😅

Sometimes it feels less like farming and more like managing a jungle. 🌱

While Kang Kong is still the main crop at Prairie Leaf, I’m also experimenting with hydroponic kamote (sweet potato leaves). These plants started from a single sweet potato and are now beginning to fill their bin. The young shoots (talbos ng kamote) and leaves (dahon ng kamote) are edible and commonly used in Filipino cooking.
