What is a flea?
A flea is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that feeds on the blood of mammals, including pets like dogs and cats. Fleas are notorious for causing itching and discomfort, but they can also transmit diseases and parasites, such as tapeworms, to your pet.
Here’s a little more about fleas:
Size & Appearance: Fleas are small, typically about 1/8 inch long, and are brownish-black in color. They're agile jumpers, able to leap many times their body length.
Feeding: Fleas bite through your pet's skin and feed on their blood. This can lead to itching, hair loss, and in severe cases, anemia (low red blood cell count).
Lifecycle: Fleas go through several stages – from eggs to larvae, pupae, and finally, adult fleas. Adult fleas are the ones that bite your pet, but the larvae and pupae can live in your home or yard, making them tricky to control.
Health Risks: Fleas can transmit tapeworms and other parasites, cause allergic reactions, and lead to infections from scratching or biting the skin excessively.
