We’ve been asked what the changing weather means for the dogs. Around here, it means training starts picking up, meals get a little bigger as the workload increases, and apparently… moose stew is on the menu! 🫎🍲
A couple of days ago, we were gifted some freezer-burnt moose meat. Jenn put two roasts in the pressure cooker for four hours, and they came out so tender they practically fell apart.
There was a brief discussion about whether we were really giving this to the dogs or keeping it for ourselves. 😂 The dogs won this round, but there are still four more roasts in the freezer!
With cooler mornings and more frequent runs, we’ve also started morning brothing. If you haven’t heard us use that term before, it’s a warm, soupy mix with plenty of water and something tasty to encourage the dogs to drink. This time, moose was the special ingredient.
It’s part of how our routine changes alongside their training. As we ask more of the crew, we put more into feeding them, keeping them hydrated, and making sure they’re recovering between runs. The work on the trail is only part of getting this team ready for winter.
The dogs probably don’t care about that explanation. They’d just like Jenn to know the moose stew can stay on the menu. 🐕😂
