Thank you to DVM, Crystal Fisher of the Quesnel Veterinary Clinic for providing the QTRC with information re: equine influenza in Northern, BC. See attached note from DVM Crystal Fisher:

Dear QTRC,

From what I know of the situation, it is primarily unvaccinated horses that are getting the worst of it.

It is a primary influenza, with a secondary strep.

“As many are aware, there has been an outbreak of equine influenza in the Vanderhoof area. Several horses have become quite ill and some have developed a secondary bacterial infection. While the equine community in Vanderhoof has taken measures to contain the illness, out of an abundance of caution to protect our local equine community, it may be time to stay home with our equine friends for now.

This is a great time to consider updating your influenza vaccination for your horse. Vaccination may not keep your horse from contracting the illness, but usually their symptoms are not as severe”.
