Bettas are primarily from Thailand, but are also found in Malaysia, Indonesia, and surrounding areas where they inhabit rice paddies, swamps, slow streams, and shallow marshes.

Bettas were domesticated over 400 years ago, initially bred by the19th-century King of Siam for fighting, resulting in the name "Siamese Fighting Fish".

Betta fish prefer temperatures around 80°F and tend to be much more active when kept in warmer waters. They are best kept in 5 plus gallon tanks.

Although oxigenation and water agitation is not necessary for a Betta, without filtration an oily film of proteins tend to form. To deal with that sponge filters create minimal water movement, which prevents stress for bettas.
