Heads up if you are considering travel to/from Arizona... Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) is a highly infectious viral infection transmitted primarily by biting insects as well as through direct contact with infected animals and/or their respiratory secretions. It not only affects horses, it can affect cattle, pigs and humans(!) Clinical signs are very similar to those caused by Foot and Mouth Disease. Both are reportable diseases and strict bio-security protocols are integral to controlling/limiting outbreaks.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

EGUS (Equine Gatric Ulcer Syndrome) is a very common diagnosis for our equine pals. You may not be alone if you feel like treating EGUS can cause ulcers in humans 🙈While there are ways to cut corners, buying treatments that costs less is likely costing you a lot more in the long run! “The most expensive medications are those that don’t work”. Here is a fantastic article explaining why DVS does not support the use of compounded Omeprazole. https://paulickreport.com/horse-care-category/compounded-omeprazole-may-be-cheaper-but-it-likely-doesnt-work-for-equine-ulcers

Think your horse may be affected by EGUS? Maybe you have questions about the risks vs. benefits of scoping. Let’s talk!! From scoping to treatments, prevention and more— give us a call or send us an email and let us know how we can help.

Omeprazole for horses is "finicky" to manufacture, and studies have shown that compounded versions often don't maintain their potency

Equine endocrine disorders such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) feature some striking clinical similarities, most notably a predisposition to the development of chronic laminitis. However, the underlying disease biology is quite different in each case.

This graphic describes some key differences to be aware of between the two diseases.

If you have questions or concerns about your horse in regard to EMS or PPID, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate them.

It's MYTHBUSTER time!

The core vaccinations for every horse, regardless of their travel status, include Rabies, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), and Tetanus.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes, bacteria, and rabid animals do not discriminate when it comes to infecting horses. Whether a horse is in a freshly bedded stall, wide open pasture, or on show grounds, mosquitoes can potentially infect your horse with life threatening diseases such as EEE, WEE, and/or WNV.

Tetanus is a common clostridial bacteria present in the dirt and can infect a horse who has never left its home just the same as a horse who shows every weekend if it doesn't have proper vaccine status.

Rabies is a 100% fatal disease once clinical signs are present and is easily transmissible to humans and other animals both at home and on the trails.

It's also important to note that different regions in the U.S. may have additional "core" recommendations so be sure to ask your veterinarian what is best for your horse!
