💚🐾 BOREAL ANIMAL RESCUE CONGRATULATES GRANDMOTHER’S BAY! 🐾💚
THIS IS WHAT COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP, COMPASSION, AND REAL PROGRESS LOOK LIKE! 👏
Boreal Animal Rescue would like to take a moment to recognize and congratulate the community of Grandmother’s Bay, Saskatchewan, for the incredible progress they have made in improving animal welfare!
About a year ago, when we first began visiting Grandmother’s Bay, the conditions for many animals were far from ideal.
Our northern and remote communities face significant barriers when it comes to accessing veterinary care, animal welfare resources, funding, and infrastructure. These challenges make it incredibly difficult for communities to address animal overpopulation and improve the lives of their animals.
But Grandmother’s Bay is showing us what happens when a community decides to take action! ❤️
Our involvement began with individual community members reaching out for help with animals in need.
Before long we built relationships and Boreal Animal Rescue worked with the band and together we organized a community PULL instead of a CULL!
For those unfamiliar with the terminology, a pull means safely removing unwanted or at-risk animals and finding them appropriate care and placement, rather than resorting to euthanasia or shooting animals as a population-control measure.
The community invested its own money to bring our rescue team in to provide food, straw, medication, and assistance with the removal of approximately 20 dogs.
But what impressed us most was that their work didn’t stop when we left!
In fact, they were just getting started!
🐾 They invested in kennels and animal care infrastructure.
🐾 Community members stepped forward to advocate for animals in need.
🐾 They began organizing their own animal transportation to get dogs to safety.
🐾 They established a temporary holding shelter for animals requiring care.
🐾 They began taking responsibility for developing local animal control solutions.
🐾 Most importantly, they demonstrated that animal welfare is a community responsibility that requires ongoing leadership, planning, and commitment.
We would especially like to recognize Councillor Nora Charles, her daughter Leah McLeod, and Stanley Roberts of Grandmother’s Bay! 👏❤️
These individuals have stepped forward, taken animal welfare seriously, and put in the work to help bring their community’s animal population challenges under control.
And that deserves recognition!
At Boreal Animal Rescue, we have always believed that the long-term solution to northern animal welfare challenges cannot be rescue organizations continually removing dogs from communities.
The real solution is empowering communities to build their own animal wellness programs, develop sustainable animal control plans, and access the resources they need to succeed.
That is why we have also shared information with Grandmother’s Bay about potential federal funding opportunities, grants, and support programs that may help them continue building their animal welfare capacity.
And we will continue supporting and guiding them wherever we can!

You have shown that progress is possible, even when resources are limited.
You have shown that community leadership matters.
You have shown that investing in animal welfare is also an investment in community wellness and public safety.
And most importantly, you have shown that meaningful change happens when people stop waiting for someone else to solve the problem and start working together toward solutions.
Our hope is that other northern communities will reach out to Grandmother’s Bay, learn from their experience, and begin developing animal wellness initiatives of their own.
Imagine what northern Saskatchewan could look like if every community had dedicated animal advocates, access to basic supplies, temporary holding facilities, transportation networks, and an animal wellness plan!
That is the future we want to help build.

You are proving that we don’t have to keep doing things the way they’ve always been done. We can do better. And you are doing better!

And THIS is what animal rescue should ultimately be working toward: communities empowered to care for their own animals. 💚
