August marks a time in our gardens when beginnings and endings coexist harmoniously. It's a month of transition, where the vibrant colors of summer slowly give way to the rich hues of autumn. We have our August Gardening Checklist to help your garden keep growing well into fall.

August Garden Checklist

• Deadhead perennials to encourage 2nd bloom.
• Sow hardy annuals such as calendula, snapdragon, alyssum, poppy, and dianthus.
• Sow carrots, beets, radishes, lettuce, spinach, and peas for a 2nd crop.
• Prune wisteria, spirea, weigela, butterfly bush, boxwood, creeping thyme, and lavender.
• Fertilize flowering perennials, with half strength mix once per week.
• Collect all your favorite seeds.
• Pull weeds as they will compete for precious nutrients and water your plants need right now.
• Cut back herbs to encourage one more flush of growth before fall sets in.

In addition to this August Checklist, August is also ideal for assessing your garden's layout. Take note of what thrived and what struggled, making plans for improvements and changes. It's a chance to reflect on the successes of the season and to dream about the possibilities that next year holds.
