Reset the definition and your expectations of “socialization“. Too often I show up to coaching sessions where the client wants to teach their dog to play with other dogs. How we are looking at it is all wrong. These building blocks are foundational pieces that need to be in place in order to ensure you have a healthy relationship with your dog and that relationship fosters a well rounded dog. Everything, in my opinion, comes back to one core fundamental building block and that is impulse control. You want great recall with your dog? Then master impulse control. You want a dog that listens to you? You need to master impulse control. You want a dog that walks nicely beside you on or off the leash? Then you’re gonna need impulse control and if you want your dog to be well-rounded and get along with other dogs and not find itself getting into constant trouble, then you’re gonna need impulse control.
