Cowboy magic detangler helps you remove burrs and matts. A tiny bit goes a very long way.

An essential Griff Product!

Available online and at horse tack shops.

I also like to keep Artero Matt-X on hand. It is a dematting aerosol spray (dogs do not like the smell) but it also helps to remove matts & burrs.
This conditioning spray softens the matted area, allowing it to be broken gently, it improves the glide of the slicker through the coat and protects the hair by coating the hair with a film making it more elastic and more resistant to brushing.

Artero Matt-X has been awarded in the USA as Product of the Year
It can be used both wet and dry. When wet, it should be used on a clean coat after bathing the dog. Apply to a dry coat whilst brushing out the matt.

Spray Matt-X on matted or knotted hair, at a distance. The larger the matt, more product should be applied.

Nails:
1. Its important to have kwik stop powder on hand in case you cut the nails too short and they bleed.

2. Nail Clippers
Dog Nail Clippers and Trimmer with Safety Guard to Avoid Over-Cutting Toe Nails- Clipper for Medium- Large Breeds

** Dont forget to trim the dew claws on the front!**

3. For the super dedicated! (This will be expensive, but will last a lifetime of your pet and beyond)

A dremel and special bit can make nails a far faster & easier job. I tend to cut the tips and them dremel shorter and smooth. There is less likelihood of cracking a nail or making them bleed if you use a dremel... however, due to the hairy feet of a griff, it's ESSENTIAL that you purchase the correct bit to prevent hair from getting caught around the end.

I like the beacon hill grinder available at Tybrushe Pet Supply
https://www.tybrushe.com/product/beacon-hill-lithium-nail-grinder/152

You also need the Diamagroove bit. This will be the most expensive individual item in your kit and in my view is 1000% worth the investment. It is something worth saving for, especially if you have a hard time doing nails.

**The Pinnacle offers an hourglass shape giving you a ‘ride-line’ to easily position the nail. This is ideal when you have a dog that is nervous or wild when getting their nails Dremeled, or if you are an inexperienced handler.

The Boxer offers more of a ‘pyramid-shape,’ with a bit of tip that is more narrow than the base. This offers more versatility to get closer to the paw, go over the top of the nail, or to get under/around nails that are a bit curved under. Many customers who show dogs prefer the Boxer model because they feel it is easier to grind the top of the nail when trying to eliminate any discoloration.

I recommend Standard Grit.

Grooming /Stripping stones.

These are great for people who are new to stripping wire coats because you cannot cut the coat with them.

You can get the round artero stripping stones at Rens Pets Depot..but I much prefer the slender stones as they are easier for me to hold. It comes down to personal preference.

If you are maintaining the wire coat of your griffon, there are 2 stripping knives that are helpful.

1 coarse Blue.
This has Wide teeth. it is good for removing large amount of coat, for starting of your groom, jacket, etc.
Perfect for stripping the undercoat of thick coated dogs.

2. fine red
Is a fine blade that is ideal for removing top coats and thinning fur. It has a stainless steel blade on both sides, making it perfect for left or right-handed professionals.
Remove knots/mats by grooming through coat first.
Begin by holding the stripping knife with the smooth side o the blade facing you
Place your hand on the dog, close to the area you are going to strip and hold the skin taut.

Pin Brush, this has straight pins. They can be soft or firm, long or short...for Griffs I always like a brush that is comfortable for them, as they can be sensitive.

My personal favorite is the Chris Christensen Ice Slip Dematting brush (Available at Wheatley Wares

You can also find no-name versions of the pin brush at pet stores.

An important part of your grooming kit.

A matt breaker helps to break apart the matts so that you can then go in with your combs and brushes to remove them.

This tool is sharp and should be used with care.

It is the BEST de-matting tool that I have used.
5* for Artero!

This is available through Wheatley Wares

Specially designed for efficiently breaking apart matts. Extra sharp, protected teeth with smaller, non-sharp parting blades in between that act to further separate matts without the need to cut as much hair. Length: 6.25″ Reversible: Both right-handed and left-handed

Not essential for pet homes as you need to use this gently. I use this on the beard and furnishings before we show. This is a soft slicker brush.

(Used incorrectly, it is uncomfortable and you can scratch your dogs skin.)

The Mark Slicker Brush by Chris Christensen is a beautifully handcrafted Beech wood slicker brush whose shape does all the work for you and provides less stress for both the groomer and the animal!

Head Size: 3.5"(W) x 2.0"(H) with a 6.5" body length
High grade steel pins for less coat damage
Ultra-soft, extra flexible cushion with 1/4" foam base
Shape and contours of handle do all the work for you
Unique shape means your wrist is no longer at a constant angle.

Grooming kit essential item!

A metal comb.
You can't really have enough combs.
I hike and do field training with one in my back pocket. I keep one in my car too.
This tool will help you remove burrs immediately, which sometimes is essential with a Griff. It helps to remove tangles and break apart matts. It is an must-have item to "check your work" after grooming to make sure you dont have any matts next to the skin.

Eye boogers=gone!
Burrs= Gone!
Matts=Gone!
A beautifully combed beard= YES!

My favourite is the 000 Buttercomb Fine/Coarse
This is a sturdy stainless comb that has 2 sides one fine and the other coarse to help you groom expertly.

Available at any grooming shop, pet shop, dog show & amazon.

The #000 By Chris Christensen Systems is available at Wheatley Wares

The Items that every Griff owner should have in their grooming kit.
Grooming Rakes!

These are a key must have item for your grooming kit. I have 3 that I use regularly.

1. The Mars Coat King Undercoat Rake
The mac daddy workhorse that you definitely need!

This tool is not cheap, and you should not buy the knock- offs as they cut the coat. This one tool will do so much for you and is invaluable in helping to remove the puppy coat as the dog transitions to its adult harsher wiry coat! Also helps remove, burs, tangles and snowballs from the coat.
I suggest the 12 or 18 teeth version.
This rake is available online direct from the company or from Rens Pets Depot, or top grooming supply shops & at dog shows. Amazon sells this rake for a lot more than other stores.

2. Andis Premium Fine-Tooth Deshedding Rake - White-Green.
If used gently this just removes the downy undercoat, leaving the wire top coat. Available at most places where you can purchase grooming supplies.

3. Andis wide tooth 65760 Deshedding Tool - Reduces Shedding up to 90% This helps take out the bulk of coat if needed. Not for show dogs, but great for pet homes. must be dulled and used gently.

Your Griff Grooming Kit.

I'm about to make a series of posts, I can add links to source product.
Please note that I receive NO money for these referrals, and a link is not necessarily an endorsement of the company.

You can google the product to find out where it is available near you.

Starting with an optional item, that will 100% make your life easier.

The Grooming Table.

Why use a grooming table?

This item makes it easier to handle your dog, especially if you are alone. It helps for grooming, nail clipping, blow dying and some minor Vet work.
Dogs resist less when they are up high and you have a grooming slip around their neck.

*Never leave a dog unattended on a grooming table! *

(You must always be there, preferably with a hand on your dog.)

You can get grooming tables at Rens Pets Depot, at some dog show booths and on Amazon.

I like the lower tables because an adult Griff can be over 50 pounds, and its easier to get them on one, if they can put their front feet up and you just lift their back feet. (We dont allow dogs to jump on or off a table ever for safety reasons.)

You can go super fancy and buy a hydraulic table, but for a pet home, that's not really necessary.

My favourite table is very sturdy with folding legs. it is 2 feet/24" high, 24" wide x 44" long.

To go with the table, you also need to buy a "grooming arm & clamp". Some of the cheaper options come complete with table, arm & grooming slip.

They sell on Amazon for under $200, usually about $169 for the cheaper ones.
