Exploring the Deer Yard.

As hunter, I often grapple with a deep sense of conflict when it comes to pursuing game-birds.

How do you explain to someone that you can feel so passionately about an animal and yet harvest them?

How can you pull the trigger on something that you care deeply about ? You can’t help but feel a pang of guilt. I care deeply about these birds and the ecosystems they inhabit, and the act of taking one of their lives weighs heavily on my conscience every time.

I often find myself reflecting on the reasons I hunt. It’s about connecting with nature, honoring the skill of the hunt, and participating in a tradition that has been passed down through generations yes … but without the dogs and the art of dog work I’m not sure I would be a hunter, or at least of small game.

How can you convey to the normal dog owner the ability and willingness these dogs have to pursue these birds, it’s more than you can put into words.

You have to show them, once someone watches this in motion it makes sense .. the dance of dogs and the birds.

Only then can your average non hunter understand why you witness this. Why you choose to partake in it , and most times they find themselves willing to go again to watch it one more time… pc .madron

My BEST Girl! ā¤
Betty White!
She got her bird, I made a mistake and released her as we were walking back to my vehicle. She was pretty excited and ran off ahead....I had visions of her eating the bird. What did she actually do? She ran to the creek. put the pheasant down, had a drink..picked it back up and šŸBEE-Lined it straight to a retrieve to hand.
I will take it! If I ran like she does, I would be thirsty too.

Do the work. The time & attention that you put into training in the first 2 years of your dogs life..pay off BIG TIME for all the remaining years of their life. Training is the MOST important factor for success. It fosters a healthy relationship with your dog that lasts a lifetime.

One of the very best things an owner can get out of high quality training is a clear insight as to what their dogs are truly capable of.

Great trainers can leverage the right tools, training, and mindset to find answers that many owners would otherwise not find on their own. And even though it’s only a piece of the solution—knowing what is and isn’t possible—is an awfully important piece.

Once an owner sees what is possible, then it is up to them (with the guidance of their trainer) to become the equal of their goals and challenges with their dog. This almost always includes immense amounts of mental, emotional, and physical effort. Skills have to be learned, new ways of thinking and acting have to be developed, and lifestyle needs to be adjusted.

Of course this is a tall order. In the same way that most everyone would love to be in great shape, be financially abundant, and have great relationships with friends and family… these accomplishment all require great effort, great sacrifice, and longterm discipline and commitment.

And because we all know how us humans are wired—instant gratification with longterm costs almost always beat out delayed gratification with longterm benefits—we find most humans know precisely what’s needed, but find that cost simply too high to pay.

So when we proclaim how much we desire to transform our dogs and their behavior, it’s best, if we want to avoid appearing foolish and hypocritical, that we first examine how much of ourselves and our behavior that we’re truly willing to transform.

Said another way, don’t complain about the results you didn’t get from the actions you didn’t take. The results are waiting for you, but only come when you’ve become their equal. ā¤ļø
