Info Bites: Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) Edition! 🐶🌟
Today we’re celebrating the intelligent and devoted Shetland Sheepdog — a small herding dog with a big heart and a beautiful coat!

5️⃣ Fun Facts about Shelties:

1️⃣ Herding is in their DNA 🐑
Originally bred on the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, Shelties were used to herd sheep, ponies, and poultry. Many still have strong herding instincts today!

2️⃣ Exceptionally smart 🧠
Shelties are among the most intelligent dog breeds and excel at obedience, agility, rally, and other canine sports. They love learning new things.

3️⃣ Built for all weather 🌦️
Their thick double coat helped protect them from the harsh weather of the Shetland Islands. Regular brushing helps keep that gorgeous coat healthy and tangle-free.

4️⃣ They love to "talk" 🎶
Shelties are known for being vocal dogs. They often bark to alert their families to visitors, unusual sounds, or exciting happenings around the house.

5️⃣ A medical note 🩺
Shelties can be prone to eye conditions such as Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), hypothyroidism, and certain medication sensitivities related to the MDR1 gene mutation. Regular veterinary care and appropriate screening are important.

✨ Loyal, bright, and eager to please — Shelties are wonderful companions who shine wherever they go! 🐾

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, which means arthritis often goes unnoticed.

Signs your cat may be struggling with joint pain:
🐾 Jumping less or avoiding high places
🐾 Sleeping more
🐾 Difficulty using stairs
🐾 Matted fur from less grooming
🐾 Irritability or hiding
🐾 Trouble getting into the litter box

Many cats over age 10 have some degree of arthritis, but treatment and environmental changes can help them stay comfortable and active.

Simple adjustments like lower-entry litter boxes, pet stairs, and cozy resting spots can help your feline friend feel their best. 🐈

If your cat’s behaviour has changed, it may be worth discussing arthritis with your veterinary team.

An arthritis diagnosis doesn’t mean your pet can’t enjoy life! There are many ways we can help keep pets comfortable and active.

Treatment options may include:
💊 Pain medications prescribed by your veterinarian
🐟 Joint supplements & omega-3s
⚖️ Weight management
🏊 Controlled exercise & rehabilitation
🛏 Orthopedic beds and home modifications
🔥 Warmth and soft resting areas
🐾 Nail trims for better traction

Small changes at home can make a big difference:
✔ Add rugs on slippery floors
✔ Use ramps or stairs for furniture/cars
✔ Keep food, water, and litter boxes easy to access

Never give human pain medications unless directed by your veterinarian — many are toxic to pets.

Comfort matters at every age. ❤️

Mosquitoes Aren’t Just Annoying — They Can Carry Heartworm 🦟🐶

Mosquito season = heartworm season!

As Ontario experiences warmer weather and changing climate patterns, veterinarians are seeing increased concern about heartworm disease in dogs.

🫀 Heartworm worms live in the heart and lungs and are spread ONLY through mosquito bites.

Here’s how you can help protect your pet:
🌅 Avoid peak mosquito times (dawn & dusk)
🦟 Remove standing water around your home
💊 Keep pets on prescribed prevention
🩺 Schedule regular heartworm testing
🚗 Be extra cautious when travelling with pets to high-risk areas

Even one infected mosquito bite can put a dog at risk.

A little prevention now can help avoid serious illness later! ❤️🐾

1️⃣ Royal roots 👑
These sweet pups were beloved by British royalty, especially King Charles II of England, who was rarely seen without his spaniels — giving the breed its name!

🐱💕 Did Someone Say KITTENS?! 💕🐱

Our office manager Danica got the toughest assignment of the day… kitten cuddles! 🥰🐾

These adorable little babies are from the Hastings Humane Society and they completely stole our hearts here at the clinic. From tiny toe beans to nonstop purring, it’s safe to say productivity dropped dramatically once the kittens arrived 😹

Kitten season is in full swing, which means shelters and rescues are incredibly busy caring for vulnerable moms and babies. If you’ve been considering adding a furry family member to your home, local rescues are full of amazing animals looking for love. ❤️

Until then, we’ll just be over here soaking up all the kitten snuggles we can get! 🐾
