We love toasty cats, but not burnt beans! 🐱🐾🔥
Over the past month we have had THREE cats who have jumped onto hot wood stoves and suffered severe burns to their delicate paw pads. 😞 Thankfully all these cats are stable and recovering.

🔥We wanted to take this opportunity to suggest that everyone looks at their wood stove (or other unattended hot surfaces) and consider if it could be made safer for your pets! While this is mostly a cat thing, dogs can certainly burn themselves too (burns to curious noses hurt!).

🔥Any pet that sustains burns should always been seen by a vet right away. Burns require pain control and usually antibiotics, as well as expert bandaging. If your pet suffers a burn at home, here's what you should do:
✅Apply a cool, damp cloth to the burn. Change the cloth regularly to keep the area cool and damp. Avoid using ice, as this can cause further tissue damage.
✅Get your pet to the vet ASAP
🚫DO NOT apply any ointments / lotions / oils / etc.
🚫DO NOT bandage the wound (non-expert bandaging can do SO MUCH damage!).

🔥These are Dr. Emily's cats (Rigby and Leia) lounging in front of the wood stove. Metal dog pens can be a great way to safely keep pets back from hot surfaces. The door to the pen can be lined up with the wood stove door to allow easy filling (for Dr. Emily's husband, of course! 😜 )

Happy Halloween!
Please remember to keep your cats and dogs inside and secure tonight, as fireworks and people in costumes are spooky for pets too. Pets running away from a loud noise can get lost or injured.
Make sure to keep curious noses out of the candy bowl- sweet treats are not so sweet for our furry friends!
We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Halloween! 🎃
