Tanya and her team at Hollow Hills once again put on a super horse show! The amount of work that goes into running them when they operate this smoothly is impressive.

Our barn looks forward to attending each show whether there’s a cold warning in May or a heat warning in July!

Each of our riders had some successes and learned something today.

The highlight for me was definitely having two of my homebred geldings at the same show! Dargie was a last minute catch-ride for Tahia and Brewster was the chillest he’s ever been at a show.

They’re calling for it to be a pretty hot day tomorrow.

Some things to note:

No jackets are to be worn tomorrow. We know some chose to wear them last year when we had a scorcher and it’s just not worth wearing an extra dark layer riding. Please wear a light coloured top.

Get off your horse between classes and jump rounds. Even though you’re just ‘sitting up there’ relaxing…they’re still carrying extra weight which isn’t necessary.

Bring water from home to encourage your horse to drink more and offer it to them often.

When you’re not waiting for a class please be in the shade in the arena. Tanya has beautiful big fans that will be keeping the air moving.

When courses are being changed for the next division the more help that hops in the ring the better. The quicker we can get the course set-up and ready to go for the next class the sooner our horses can all get home to their run-ins and have a good roll in the dirt and the sooner we can relax and reminisce on our great day and scroll through all those awesome pics we took.

Please be sure to keep riders, drivers and support people hydrated too.

Let’s do our best to stay as cool as possible.

Is there a better way to spend the day than bringing in nice big bales of dry hay?

A good short read from ‘actual’ DVM experts!

Grazing muzzles and slow feeders do not cause dental damage unless they’re made of metal.

We had Dr. Bishop at our farm doing some dentistry and asked him because a couple posts were floating around about the ‘dangers of grazing muzzles and slow feed nets’ and his response was the same as whats stated in this article

Thankfully we do have large green pastures that aren’t already looking tough this time of year and wearing a muzzle until things ‘dry up’ is a necessity for the fluffy easy keepers at our place.

What is the real risk to horse teeth and overall horse health from wearing a grazing muzzle? How does it compare to an at-risk (laminitic, obese, or metabolic) horse not wearing a grazing muzzle at all?

Most grazing muzzles don't have any negative effects on your horse's teeth. However, metal muzzles or slow feeders may cause damage in addition to excessive wear, chips, or fractures. There are also a few brands of grazing muzzles on the market made from a thick, hard plastic that can cause abnormal wear to the incisors. Many of the hard plastic grazing muzzles now offer softer inserts to minimize this type of damage.

The attrition that we appreciate to the incisors does have the potential to result in an exposed pulp, which could then result in pulpits or a tooth root infection. However, this is rarely the case. Generally, the teeth are able to repair themselves, by sealing off any exposed pulp, at a rate equal to or more rapid than the wearing process. This ultimately means that most of the cases that we see of abnormal wear to incisors from grazing muzzles is primarily cosmetic.

The risk of laminitis, on the other hand, is very real and the results can be catastrophic. Not wearing a grazing muzzle for even a few hours for a horse with EMS (equine metabolic syndrome) or PPID (Cushing's) can be problematic. Always follow your veterinarian's recommendations when managing your horse's metabolic issues, as these can and sometimes do have deadly complications.

If you have questions or concerns on if your equine should be wearing a grazing muzzle, contact your veterinarian.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

I asked a boarder for some video of her riding her gelding to share with someone that I thought might be interested in her gelding for a part-board

To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement

This young lady and I chat a lot in her lessons about relationship building with our horse and developing trusting relationships that don’t require bigger bits and bigger spurs to accomplish goals.

I believe that when your horse trusts you, and actually likes you and your company, that they’ll do anything for you.

Seeing videos of young teens riding horses that are blasting off in every direction towards jumps that are too big for their skill scares me and the fact that they think this behavior is funny or, even worst, normal is even scarier.

As equestrians we can do better and today this young lady sent me a video that made me hopeful that what we say as coaches that put the horse first is being heard and our horses are going have a better future when there are young horsewomen like her around.

You know your kid is actually paying attention in the barn when she says ‘My knee hurts…can I take Previcox?’

I really think Bute might be more appropriate? 🤷🏼‍♀️
