Autumn shedding season is almost upon us!
We have a few tools to help keep your dog and cat feeling and looking their best during shedding season.
Dead, loose hair can add weight to the coat, cause tangles and mats, and cause hairballs.
While regular brushing will help keep the dead and loose hair under control and off your floors and furniture; there are specialised tools that can do the job more efficiently.
For short haired dogs and cats shedding blades can be a useful tool, although not ideal for along the spine and ribs as it can be a little uncomfortable if too much pressure is used. A grooming glove can also help remove the dead hair while your pet just feels they’re being patted!
Rakes and Shed Magic tools are fantastic for double coated breeds, they do a much better job of getting through thicker hair and grabbing the dead and looser undercoat than a tool with smaller teeth.

Nail care!

Keeping your pet’s nails well cared for is vital for their overall health. Long nails are not only uncomfortable, but left unchecked can also eventually lead to physical changes in the paws, elbows, hips, shoulders, spine and neck!
Long nails in cats can do the same, as well as running the risk of getting them caught on something, like a blanket, and injuring the toe and paw, and to avoid them inadvertently scratching you or your family! Cats need to be able to retract their claws for their safety and yours, not to mention your furniture!

As with everything, it’s vital to get puppies and kittens used to the process as young as possible in order to avoid problems down the road.

We have a variety of styles of nail clippers, grinders, and files in order to meet everyone’s needs. We also carry a clotting gel in case you accidentally nick the pets quick.

After your slicker brush the next most important tool in your grooming kit is a good, steel comb. There are a couple of different types of comb;

Some have wide and narrow teeth on opposite sides for locating and then gently helping remove tangles that the slicker brush missed.

Some have alternating long and short teeth which help not only with tangles, but also for removing dead hair and loose undercoat.

Others have rotating teeth that glide through the coat and help remove tangles with less pulling on the skin.

Whichever comb you choose, always comb through small sections, slowly and gently, to locate tangles and then carefully work them out with the comb or your slicker brush.

Let’s talk grooming!
This month we will be covering some of the grooming tools we have in store to help keep your pet looking and feeling their best!

Today’s post will be about Slicker Brushes, one of the most useful and important brushes in your grooming kit.
Slicker brushes help remove tangles, remove dead hair, and spread the skins natural oils through the coat.
There are a variety of types of slicker brushes; the standard slicker brush has closely spaced pins that work well for most breeds with short or double coats such as Labradors, or on dogs with a silky, single hair coat such as Shih-Tzus.
The Long Hair Slicker has pins that are almost twice the length of the Standard Slicker, making it ideal for dealing with those thicker double coats like Huskies, Corgies, or Golden Retrievers, or for single, but thick, coats like Poodles.
We also carry Flexible Slickers which are fantastic for cats as they adjust to the contours of your pet’s body.
Some of the slickers have coated tips to make them gentler on the skin, which is great for puppies or cats, but the pins also tend to be a little too soft to make it through thicker coats.
We also carry Self Cleaning slickers that make cleaning the brush so easy and fast!
