Out of office but still in town! I will be trying my best to refrain from looking at emails, DMs and inquires over the next week 😅 This stay-cation is about decompression, relaxation, and tidying up the remaining boxes from moving 📦🫪 Will get back to you when I’m refreshed!

What a huge surprise it was to run into Justin Veenema | Dog Photographer while I was out walking I Z Z Y 🐻 💜 Little did I know, it was not accidental at all, and sneaky Miss Laura 💜✨ coordinated the whole thing with Justin🙈

I’m so happy Izzy got her moment in the spotlight. She’s such a unique and fun girlie, who happens to be quite photogenic 📸 I was worried Izzy was going to bring out her spice with Justin, but he was very good at respecting her space, taking my cues and letting Izzy approach at her own pace! She definitely gave him all her best smiles 🫶 Thanks for these lovely photos Justin!!

Leia is the most happy-go-lucky dog ever! She is still quite young (1 year old!) and is currently working on managing her excitement, loose leash walking and general leash manners (like not running off the sidewalk 😅).

In our first couple of sessions, I attempted to dive straight into doing loose leash walking drills with her. Although she was making small steps in progress, I quickly realized that this girl just needed to let some beans out.

I obviously want to build these skills with her, but I’m also trying to keep in mind how we can make this process as fun as possible for her. And of course, not make it a frustrating experience either.

So I told her parents, I’m going to switch it up! Let’s pop her in the car, and drive her to an open area a few mins away so she can run that initial energy off, and then let’s do that more challenging leash work. And what a world of a difference that made!

This isn’t a permanent plan, but while she’s learning more skills, this will help her reduce the rehearsal of pulling on the leash and getting frustrated with the practice.

She’s much happier with this routine and I can see she’s learning better with each walk.

Who wants to see more of Leia’s progress? 🤓

If you’re wondering what I’m doing, I’m loading up the marker word “yes” for Stanley 🤓 I’m pairing the word “yes” with a tasty treat so he starts to develop an strong association and connection between the two.

Eventually, I want to be able to use this marker word to inform Stanley of the precise moment he’s performed a desired behavior. For example, noticing and trigger and choosing to disengage from it. The word “yes” bridges the gap of time between the action (disengaging from the trigger) and the reward or positive reinforcer (the treat).

If your dog doesn’t have a “yes” marker in their tool belt, I would highly recommend you start teaching this skill to them! Understanding a marker word, or even a clicker, is especially super valuable to puppies, new rescues and reactive doggies.

Plus I would love for more of us dog owners to be out here on the streets looking crazy together 😌

If you’re one of my clients, you know I’m going to be hounding you if you give your dog the treat right out of the bag 😂

99% of treats can be chopped up at least once, twice, or dare I even say, THRICE times 😌 Especially if you’re working on reactivity - you’re going to need a handful of delicious goodies when you head out that door.

Chopping up those treats will give you more opportunities to play, engage, and reinforce those good behaviours, AND it’s better for your wallet and your dog’s waist line!

Don’t let me catch you giving your dog the whole dang treat 👀 Trust me, they won’t know the difference!
