When the heat hits, your horses will tell you exactly how they feel about their water situation. 💧🐴

June is the month water becomes your most important management tool. Horses in summer heat and active work can drink 15 to 20 gallons per day, and that number goes up fast during hot, humid stretches.

If you haven't stocked up on electrolytes for this season yet, now is a great time to get ahead of it. Electrolytes help horses replace what they lose in sweat and encourage consistent drinking, which is especially important before, during, and after riding.

Fresh cut grass and green browse can be high in moisture and low in the minerals goats need most, especially copper, zinc, and selenium. These are the nutrients that directly affect coat condition, hoof health, reproduction, and immune function.

Goats are also notoriously prone to copper deficiency, and it's one of the most commonly missed deficiencies in small ruminant herds.

Myth vs. Fact: Swine edition 🐷

MYTH: "Pigs will eat anything, so they don't need a real feed plan."

FACT: Pigs are actually one of the more nutritionally precise species to raise. They're monogastric, meaning single-stomach like us, so they can't digest fiber as efficiently as ruminants. They rely heavily on a balanced diet of protein, energy, and key amino acids to grow and perform well.

The "pigs eat everything" reputation comes from their willingness to try anything, not from the fact that anything is actually good for them.

Getting the energy-to-protein ratio right matters a lot, especially during growth phases. 🙌

If you're bringing your cat along for the ride this June, the right carrier makes all the difference. Look for one with good ventilation, a secure latch, and enough room for them to sit and turn comfortably.

Did you know? Those pretty wildflowers in summer pastures aren't always as harmless as they look. 🌸

Several common field plants, including some thistle varieties and buttercup, can be mildly toxic or cause digestive issues in cattle and other livestock when grazed in large quantities.

Most animals will naturally avoid them when they have plenty of good forage available. But when pasture is overgrazed or dry, hungry animals are much less selective about what they eat.

Keeping forage quality high and monitoring grazing rotation is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your herd this summer. 🫡
