Some horses come into your life for a reason, and Lucky’s story is one that will always hold a special place in our hearts. ❤️
When Lucky was born in 2024, we knew our days with Virtue were numbered because of his age. Wade told me the day Lucky hit the ground, “Your replacement stud just arrived.”
With his pedigree and his colour, it seemed like a no-brainer. But the truth was, I wasn’t ready to replace my Virtue just yet.
God had other plans. 💔
Just a few days after Lucky was born, we lost Virtue. Little did we know, that was only the beginning of Lucky’s story.
At just three weeks old, our plans changed again.
It was day 10 of the Calgary Stampede when we got a call from the neighbour checking our horses. There was trouble in the pasture. Lucky’s momma had unexpectedly passed away.
We were 10 hours from home, and I immediately called two of the best neighbours anyone could ask for, Derek and Wanda Denham. They know horses better than just about anyone, and I knew Lucky was in good hands.
By the time I made it home, roughly 24 hours later, Lucky had been roped in the pasture, hauled to their place, and was already sucking a bottle! 🍼🍀
And just like that, our summer turned into raising an orphaned foal.
Thankfully, with the help of Shane and Jennifer Hue, who stepped up to look after Lucky whenever we were away, we were still able to keep going down the road.
Lucky quickly became just like having another dog in the yard. He was part of everything, and I think it’s safe to say he had us all wrapped around his little hoof. ❤️
The funny thing is, I never planned on owning another stallion.
When Virtue was gone, I had fully intended to be done with the breeding business. That chapter was supposed to closed.
But as summer went on and the annual payments for Virtue’s incentives came due, we started looking at things a little differently.
We looked at the horses the girls were running, horses we had raised ourselves, and realized there was absolutely no way we could financially replace them if something were to happen.
That’s when we made the decision to keep a couple of stallions and continue giving the girls the opportunity to raise, train, and build their own horses.
Sometimes the plans you make aren’t the plans God has for you.
Lucky came into this world just days before we said goodbye to Virtue, lost his own momma far too soon, and somehow found his way into a future we hadn’t planned on.
We truly cannot thank Derek and Wanda Denham, and Shane and Jennifer Hue enough for being such a huge part of Lucky’s journey. Without you, his story could have been very different. We will forever be grateful. 🫶🏼
