This is when a horse raises his head, curls his upper lip and partially closes his nostrils. This allows him to trap and analyse pheromone scents and unsual smells.

Your horse will do this to familiarise and memorise new scents. It is also seen in stallions druing the breeding season to assess whether the mare is in heat.
