! We've created an educational guide to help residents better understand how to properly dispose of waste, and what to know about fines and the reporting process for littering and illegal dumping🗑️♻️

We've included key information in eight of Pickering's most commonly spoken languages, however, residents can use the Google Translate tool at pickering.ca/Trash to read the guide in over 100 languages.

Printed copes will be available at City facilities soon - stay tuned to grab your copy🗞️✅

You’ve probably seen the signs - in your neighbourhood🏡, on roadsides🛣️, and near parks and trails🌳.

If you spot a sign while you're out walking, snap a photo, share it and tag us, and use the hashtag to help spread awareness. You might even see your photo featured next on our feed🤳✅

These signs and social media posts help raise awareness about the seriousness of the issue and equip community members with the information they need to take action. While social media posts aren't a standalone solution for this trashy behaviour, they're part of a broader campaign focused on education, awareness, and action. If residents aren't aware of the severity of the problem, they may not think to talk about it with their family, friends, and neighbours, or even recognize the importance of reporting it. The more we talk about it, the closer we are to shifting habits!

The City’s Municipal Law Enforcement Officers conduct regular patrols and thoroughly investigate public reports. Each investigation is taken seriously, involving comprehensive steps such as site inspections, evidence gathering, witness interviews, preparing charges, court proceedings, and more. This rigorous process ensures that when charges are laid, they hold up. Over the past several months, the City has laid over 30 charges for illegal dumping, demonstrating that enforcement is happening and offenders are being held accountable.

Do you own a designated heritage property in Pickering?🏡

You may qualify for a 20% property tax rebate through the City’s new Residential Heritage Property Tax Relief Program, designed to assist owners with the cost of ongoing maintenance, conservation, and restoration.

Why it matters⬇️

Pickering is home to a variety of unique heritage buildings that tell the story of our community’s roots. This program recognizes the dedication it takes to maintain these properties and offers tangible support to those helping preserve our past for future generations.

By caring for your heritage home, you’re not just maintaining a property - you're promoting Pickering’s unique identity and legacy for the benefit of the entire community.

To qualify, properties must⬇️

✔️ Be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act (Part IV or V)
✔️ Be in good, livable condition
✔️ Be classified as residential and taxable

🗓️ Apply each year by February 28.

Please note: The rebate amount varies depending on your property’s assessed value and the eligible portion of your taxes.

Visit pickering.ca/heritage to learn more and apply.
