πŸΎπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ UNLEASHED 2026 – COURSE REVEAL! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸΎ
We're excited to officially introduce the course for the inaugural UnLeashed Dog Trail Run happening August 15th!
πŸ“ Starting at Portage Road, participants will head down the LOWER trail toward the Petawawa River, cross the bridge, continue to the trail connection point, then return along the UPPER LEVEL of the Algonquin Trail before crossing the river a second time and finishing back at Portage Road.
πŸ• 2.5K = One Loop
πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί 5K = Two Loops
We designed this route to keep participants moving in the same direction, reducing dog-to-dog congestion and creating a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone.
Along the way you'll enjoy:
🌲 Beautiful sections of the Algonquin Trail
πŸŒ‰ Two stunning bridge crossings
πŸ›€οΈ A mix of pavement and gravel surfaces
🐾 Amazing views of the Petawawa River
To keep things safe and fun, there will be NO mass start. Participants will leave individually every 15–30 seconds. After all, 50 excited dogs starting at once sounds more chaotic than fun! πŸ˜†
⚠️ Registration is capped at 50 participants in the 2.5K and 50 participants in the 5K. Many spots are already filled, and once they're gone, registration will close.
If you haven't explored this route yet, grab your dog and check it out. We think you'll quickly see why we chose it!

🐾 Important Update About Our Upcoming UnLeashed Trail Run 🐾

When we were asked to bring something new to the Water & Dirt Festival, we wanted to create a fun, affordable activity that encouraged people to get outside and be active with their dogs. Living and working in Petawawa, we see people running, walking, and exploring the trails with their dogs every day β€” ourselves included β€” so it felt like a natural fit for our community.

As we planned the event, we researched canicross and tried to model our event after the fun run and recreational-level events we found. Based on that research, we believed we were creating an accessible introduction to running with your dog.
Since announcing the event, we've learned that within the established canicross community, the term canicross carries specific expectations around equipment, competition standards, and event formats. It was never our intention to misrepresent the sport or offend those who are passionate about it. We simply wanted to create a welcoming community event that got people and their dogs active together.
After listening to the feedback, we have decided to remove the term canicross from our event branding moving forward.
πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ• UnLeashed Trail Run by End of the Leash
The event remains exactly what it was always intended to be:
βœ… A fun recreational trail run with your dog
βœ… A beginner-friendly introduction to the activity
βœ… An affordable and welcoming community event
βœ… A chance to enjoy our beautiful local trails
If you registered expecting a sanctioned or competitive canicross event and feel this is not what you signed up for, please reach out and we will happily provide a refund.
If you're simply looking for a fun morning on the trails with your pup, we'd love to have you join us.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the event. Our goal has always been simple: create a positive experience that gets people and their dogs outside, active, and having fun together. πŸΎπŸ’š

🐾 β€œWHY DOES MY DOG PULL ON THE LEASH?!” 🐾
If your daily walk feels more like getting dragged behind a sled dog team… trust us, you are NOT alone πŸ˜…
One of the most common questions we get is:
πŸ‘‰ β€œWhy does my dog pull so much on walks?”
Here’s the truth:
Dogs naturally walk faster than humans. Add in exciting smells, squirrels, people, bikes, birds, and all the fun distractions of the world… and suddenly your peaceful walk becomes a full body workout πŸ˜‚
But leash pulling usually comes from:
πŸ• Excitement
πŸ• Lack of structure or consistency
πŸ• Too much pent-up energy
πŸ• Accidentally being rewarded for pulling
πŸ• Wanting to explore faster
πŸ• Not fully understanding what we want from them
The good news?
Loose leash walking IS something you can improve with patience, consistency, and proper training πŸ’ͺ
A few quick tips:
βœ”οΈ Reward your dog often for staying beside you
βœ”οΈ The second pulling starts β€” stop moving
βœ”οΈ Change direction randomly to keep your dog focused on YOU
βœ”οΈ Start practicing in quieter, low distraction areas
βœ”οΈ Keep training sessions short and positive
βœ”οΈ Use high value rewards your dog actually cares about
βœ”οΈ Make sure your dog gets enough mental AND physical exercise
βœ”οΈ Stay calm β€” tension on the leash creates more tension in your dog
One of the biggest mistakes people make?
Only correcting the pulling instead of rewarding the good walking πŸ‘€
Remember:
🐾 Dogs repeat what works
🐾 Consistency matters more than perfection
🐾 Even great dogs need regular practice
And yes…
You absolutely CAN teach an old dog new tricks πŸ˜‰
If walks have become frustrating instead of enjoyable, we can help! Our obedience classes focus on real-world skills that make everyday life with your dog easier, calmer, and more fun.

πŸŽ‰πŸΎ END OF THE LEASH TURNS 5! πŸΎπŸŽ‰
5 years ago we walked into an old car dealership maintenance bay with a dream, a vision, and honestly… a whole lot of unknowns. In the middle of COVID, during one of the craziest times for small businesses, we decided to take the leap and build something special for our community.
From hand building the entire store ourselves, to watching End Of The Leash grow into what it is today… we are beyond grateful. ❀️
Over the last 5 years we’ve seen so many businesses open, and sadly many close. These times haven’t been easy for small businesses, which makes us even more thankful to still be here, still growing, and still serving this amazing community every single day.
To every customer who shopped local, trusted our advice, attended classes, shared our posts, supported our events, or simply cheered us on , THANK YOU. You helped build this dream with us.
We’re keeping our actual anniversary simple and true to us:

🚨 Clarification Update – UnLeashed Cani Cross 🚨
We’ve had a growing number of questions and concerns regarding the name of our newest event, so we wanted to take a moment to clarify exactly what UnLeashed Cani Cross is.
First and foremost β€” this is NOT an off-leash dog running event.
The name β€œUnLeashed” is simply a fun play on words connected to our name, End of the Leash. Think:
✨ Unleash your energy
✨ Unleash your adventure
✨ Unleash the fun
This event is a canicross-style trail run where participants run WITH their dog while the dog remains attached to them at all times using proper running equipment.
Safety for both dogs and handlers is extremely important to us, and we have equipment requirements in place for that reason.
βœ… Mandatory Equipment:
β€’ Hands-free leash setup attached to your body
β€’ Secure, safe harness/setup for your dog (recommended)
β€’ Leash with some give (bungee/flexible line recommended)
🚫 Not Permitted:
β€’ Handheld leash-only setups
β€’ Retractable leashes
β€’ Choke chains
β€’ Prong collars
β€’ Correction-based tools
πŸ‘ Recommended:
β€’ Canicross pulling harness
β€’ Shock-absorbing bungee line
β€’ Running waist belt
This event is meant to be a fun, exciting, beginner-friendly trail adventure for people and their dogs , not a free-for-all off-leash run.
We honestly thought we were just being fun and witty with the name, but we completely understand where the confusion came from and appreciate everyone who reached out with concerns.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple:
🐾 Get outside
🐾 Hit the trails
🐾 Have fun with your dog
🐾 Build community
🐾 Create a safe and exciting event for everyone involved
Thank you for all the excitement and support around this new event already. We can’t wait to see everyone hit the trails with us πŸ’š
