🫐 Hey Blueberries!! 🫐

With this glorious weather we have been having I am sure that you folks have started notice that it's that time of year again...BLACKFLIES 😬

If you notice red, sore spots on your pet's stomach after being outside or laying in the grass, they are most likely black fly bites!

They will heal and disappear in time, and generally need no treatment at all. If your pet is particularly itchy, you can give Benadryl, PLEASE check with your veterinarian for the appropriate dose for your pet!

🐰 Happy Easter Folks!! 🐰

‼ REMINDER ‼ We are OPEN today 8am to 6pm 💜

As we welcome this wonderful mild weather, we need to be checking our flea and tick prevention stock for our furry friends as the ticks in our area are out in full force right now!

Ticks can transmit serious diseases, such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis. These illnesses can have long term health implications to our pets. Additionally, ticks pose a risk to humans if they were to come in contact with them. Lyme disease in particular is a concern for humans, especially in this area!

So please check your pet’s parasite prevention stock and if you need more, don’t hesitate to contact the clinic by TEXT, phone OR email:

As we are getting our Easter goodies and baskets ready we would like to talk about Chocolate toxicity!

Whilst Easter is a fun and enjoyable time for our families it can be a dangerous one for our dogs! Chocolate contains methylxanthines, theobromine and caffeine which are highly toxic for dogs. When a dog ingests chocolate it can cause the below symptoms:

🐣 Vomiting
🐣 Diarrhea
🐣 Hyperactivity
🐣 Tremors
🐣 Seizures
🐣 Racing heart rate
🐣 Death, in severe cases.

If you suspect your dog has ingested chocolate you should call your vet as soon as possible, being able to identify what exactly your dog ate and how much it ate can be very helpful in determining the level of toxicity. The first step of treatment is to remove as much chocolate from the dog’s body as possible. We can do this by inducing vomiting or using absorbents such as activated charcoal to bind the chocolate and keep it from being absorbed by the GI tract. For many dogs removing the undigested chocolate will avoid any severe symptoms and just result in an upset stomach however in more severe cases hospitalization and intravenous fluids may be required!

If you have any questions surrounding chocolate toxicity, don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, TEXT, or email:

🫐 🫐

Hey folks, the ticks are out in full force so today we are talking about Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease that is on the rise in this area!!

Anaplasmosis is a disease of dogs and rarely of cats caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. This infectious organism is an unusual type of bacteria known as a rickettsial agent/bacterium. The disease is transmitted to dogs and cats by a tick bite. It has been reported from around the world in a variety of animals.

Signs of Anaplasmosis usually begin 1-2 weeks after the tick bite. Anaplasmosis organisms enter the bloodstream and live in the animal’s white blood cells, which normally aid in fighting infections. This invasion of the white blood cells creates inflammation throughout the body. Signs can include:

‼️️Poor appetite

‼️Fever

‼️Stiff/painful joints

‼️Trouble walking

‼️Sometimes pets may have signs associated with bleeding as well, bloody nose, dark bloody stool or bruising may be visible

Not all pets have symptoms, some pets will only appear sick for a short period of time and then start to improve. We don’t fully understand why this happens, but it may be associated with a pet’s ability to fight off the infection.

At Blueberry Creek we diagnose Anaplasmosis with a blood test called a 4DX. It is treated with a course of antibiotics, most commonly doxycycline. Treatment is usually between 2-4 weeks, longer if the pet also has Lyme disease, but it depends on the specific case. Pets usually feel better within a few days after beginning the course of antibiotics. If anemia (decrease in red blood cells) or thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelets) is severe then a blood transfusion may also be needed. Most dogs and cats make a full recovery.

There is no vaccine available to prevent Anaplasmosis so the best form of protection for your pet is year round tick prevention.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you have concerns or questions about Anaplasmosis! 💙
