Breed of the week! The Border Collie!

Border Collies are a British breed of herding dog of the collie type of medium size. It originates in the region of the Anglo-Scottish border, and descends from the traditional sheepdogs once found all over the British Isles. It is kept mostly as a working sheep-herding dog or as a companion animal.

Intelligent, responsive, loyal, alert, keen & energetic, these dogs are not for first time dog owners and require extensive training and stimulation. Found to be more gentle and one of my favourites of the herding breeds, everyone meet sweet, Ryder!

Rattlesnakes!

Here in the Okanagan we have a venomous snake that has the capacity to do severe damage to us and our dogs if they bite. Known as the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, a bite from these guys is not common when encountering them, the potential for harm is still evident. Most rattlers will “dry bite” as a warning as to not use up their venoum, being one of their only defence mechanisms, they don’t carelessly expel it at any given chance. Awareness and knowledge is key for navigating this animal in our terrain, but also having compassion and understanding that they are a vital part of our ecosystem is crucial.

Over the years I have encountered these snakes in my group hikes, and I have trained my pack “snake safety” training. They are present in our world and it’s important we do the necessary training ourselves to ensure we aren’t in a scenario where our dogs could get critically injured!

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns! Have the best day! 🐕 🐾 ⛰️ ☀️

Advice from your friendly neighbourhood dog trainer!

Don’t be afraid to be stern with your dog at times when it’s necessary! Our furry friends look to us for structure and guidance, but if they aren’t seeing you as their leader they will take the role themselves! This can land you in a heap of trouble.

Remember, dogs need rules, boundaries, structure and expectations just as much as they need praise and reward. Balance is key!

Breed of the week:

The Blue Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog

NOT a breed for inexperienced dog handlers, please do your research before purchasing one!

The Australian Cattle Dog, or simply Cattle Dog, is a breed of herding dog developed in Australia for droving cattle over long distances across rough terrain. This breed is a medium-sized, short-coated dog that occurs in two main colour forms. It has either red or black hair distributed fairly evenly through a white coat, which gives the appearance of a "red" or "blue" dog. Extremely intelligent and can take on anything you throw at it. This dog needs loads of mental and physical education. If given everything it requires, this can be an amazing dog.

A medium to large sized herding dog with thick, white, double-layer coats. They are spitz-type dogs which take their name from the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia. Descending from the Nenets Herding Laika, they are domesticated animals that assist in herding, hunting, protection and sled-pulling.
