‼️ URGENT 🚨, foster homes needed (ESPECIALLY PARRY SOUND AREA!, but also the GTA)-Adoptions needed too!
The story: We took in 8 very young rats (5 girls 3 boys) found living under a bridge in Meaford ON. We hoped they were young enough not to be pregnant, but unfortunately all 5 of these babies themselves, gave birth to a total of 52 Babies! 😱
What we need: HELP! We supply everything (cage, 24/7 support, medical care etc…), we just need homes and hands who can help raise these little cuties until we can find them all homes 🥰.
Criteria: NON-smoking/vaping, responsible, reliable to check in with us, provide pics/videos to update our website, able to drive to us OR within 30 mins from one of our locations (Parry Sound, Hamilton/Burlington).

You're our favourite too Lillie... shh don't tell the others 🤫

Lillie has been hanging out with Mama C while her main mom (Mama M) has been having a much needed vacation! She's been hanging out in Frankie's original room stashing, snacking, getting up to mischief and loving life! We love you little Lillie 💗

Senior rats are so special 💕. Scar & Snow are 39 months old (3y 3mo) and still loving life, though life looks a bit different than it once did. I know many believe that once rats are no longer very mobile, they have no quality of life and should be humanely euthanized, but I couldn’t disagree more. Mobility is only ONE factor to consider when assessing quality of life. When you’ve spent 3+ years with an animal, you know them. You know what makes them happy, you know how they show when they’re not. Arbitrarily making a decision to end their life based just on mobility is what’s cruel in my opinion, not letting them live out their senior days in luxury. Taking the time and effort to adapt their environment to fit their stage of life is a gift to them, and they are a gift to me, and to Lillie, who has lived alone since Millie passed last September. She has not been interested in other rats since, until these 2 entered her world, old and calm, they are giving her the gift of rat company again 💕🥰🐁🐁🥹.

Being a guardian to hundreds of tiny lives means being there for hundreds of unique sunsets. 🌅

Tonight belongs to Luna. At nearly 3 years old, her tired heart is finally slowing down. As a caregiver, the greatest gift I can give her isn’t just the medicine—it’s the comfort. It’s the oxygen, the soft fleece, her sisters’ company, and a song. We don’t just rescue them for the fun days; we rescue them for these moments, too. 🕊️🐀

We fought a hard battle with heart failure together, and we LEARNED SO MUCH from her. 💊 The “Heart Trio”: How We Supported Luna.
Managing end-stage heart failure in a senior rat is a delicate balancing act. Here is the breakdown of the “Triple Therapy” that gave Luna MONTHS of QUALITY life:

1. Pimobendan (Vetmedin) * The Goal: Contractility. Dose used: 0.25-0.5mg/kg every 12 hours.

How it works: It’s an “inodilator.” It helps the heart muscle contract more forcefully while simultaneously opening up the blood vessels.

The Result: It makes the heart a more efficient pump without demanding more oxygen, helping to move blood forward rather than letting it “back up” into the lungs.

2. Enalapril (ACE Inhibitor). Dose used: 0.25-0.5mg/kg every 12 hours.

The Goal: Afterload Reduction (Blood Pressure).

How it works: It blocks the enzyme that causes blood vessels to tighten.

The Result: By relaxing the “pipes,” the heart doesn’t have to push nearly as hard to get blood to the rest of the body. In rats, moving to twice-daily (Q12H) dosing is often the “missing piece” to keep their blood pressure stable around the clock.

3. Furosemide (Lasix). Dose: 2-10mg/kg every 6-12 hours (as needed).

The Goal: Diuresis (Fluid Management).

How it works: It’s a powerful loop diuretic that tells the kidneys to flush out excess sodium and water.

The Result: This is the “rescue” med. It pulls fluid out of the lungs (pulmonary edema) so the patient can breathe. Finding the “Sweet Spot” between keeping the lungs dry and the kidneys hydrated is the ultimate goal of hospice care.

We’ve been quiet lately, and here’s why…

Phoenix, one of my (Mariah) dogs, is extremely lucky to be alive 🙏. Years of manual bladder expression secondary to her paraplegia, and a persistent UTI are thought to have led to a bladder rupture she sustained 2 weeks ago. Thanks to the excellent emergency, critical care, and surgical teams at OVC in Guelph, her large bladder tear was repaired, and she was successfully treated for all other issues that resulted from having an abdomen full of urine where it’s not supposed to be!

We also discovered the suspected cause of her paraplegia, a bullet that appears to be embedded in her lumbar spine. 2 other bullets were identified, one near her shoulder, and another near her cervical spine.

We also found out that her pelvis is a total mess, with old fractures likely due to osteopenia (weak bones from disuse/inability to weight-bear). She also has a chunk of her left femur missing, appearing to have had a femoral head osteotomy, likely done as a salvage procedure after what was probably a major traumatic injury at some point in her past.

Phoenix came to Canada in March 2022, from the streets of Saudi Arabia, where she was beaten, shot, and abandoned in the desert.

I sincerely hope that the humans who did this to her, are paid a visit by some serious karma. She is home now though, with a permanent cystostomy tube that her urine will be drained from. This will mean a very different life for her now, but she is alive, and happy. Recovering surprisingly well, doing lots of resting with her family, and eating lots of snow to stay hydrated 😋. We will be back to more rat posts soon, once the overwhelm of this settles a bit 🙏.

Love you Minnie 💕. Another of the Crazy Toothed ladies have entered the clouds ☁️. Ultimately from a pituitary tumor that she successfully fought for many months thanks to Bromocriptine and dexamethasone! 🙏 Making it essentially to age 3 is quite an accomplishment for a rat, especially one who had dental issues her whole life, making her at constant infection risk from the weekly trims. Most of her brothers and sisters made it to 2.5 years, and 3 are still alive, approaching their 3rd bday (Winnie, Snow, Scar)! It could be some good genetics in the group, although I think it’s largely because their kidneys are probably extremely healthy due to a lifetime of requiring wet food, unable to eat solid food with their crooked teeth. Rats are very prone to kidney disease, even at an early age. Commercial diets are far too high in protein, and Rat’s metabolism’s are so fast that their kidneys have a very high burden of processing waste throughout their . It’s often a silent killer in Rats. Because of the amazing longevity of these Rats, we have started giving wet food to all of our Rats a couple times a week, ensuring their kidneys are in optimal health! We cherished the almost 3 years that we spent with Minnie, from the time her and her family arrived as three week old babies, rescued from an abandoned feeder breeder, to the day she joined her late mom and siblings ❤️‍🩹🫂. Always always little one 💕.

💔🌈 Nala Noodle! Can you tell she’s almost 3 years old in the 2nd pic taken a week ago?! 😱Forever young these girls are 💖. What a privilege to have spent almost 3 WHOLE YEARS with you 💕. Arrived at 2-3 weeks old with her whole family (the crazy toothed clan), and spent her life at the rescue due to severe Malloclusion. She got her teeth trimmed weekly from the time she was 2 months old, until now. Definitely one of the more tolerant ladies of mamma dentist 🦷😬. The crooked one, loved her life sideways after an ear infection at a young age, though treated promptly and aggressively, left her with a permanent head tilt. She loved running on her wheel, climbing on me, and cuddling her siblings. A few months ago she developed pituitary tumor symptoms, as most elderly female rats do 💔. The Bromocriptine and intermittent dexamethasone and mannitol gave her 2-3 more really good months. She started slowing down and not responding to the meds as well about a week ago, and just slowly drifted off into her dreams, surrounded by the love and snuggles of her sisters and I. A very peaceful way to go, after a life very well lived. Your energy will be greatly missed in your group little one ❤️‍🩹. I love you so much Nala, always always. .
