After more than 50 years of memories, the current H.G.R. Mews Community Centre will officially close on Thursday, August 28. To mark this milestone, we’re offering free activities for the community to enjoy one last time:

🏊‍♀️ Free Swims: Wed, Aug 27: Everyone Welcome (4–4:50 p.m. & 5–5:50 p.m.), Lane & Leisure (6–6:50 p.m.) or Thurs, Aug 28: Lane & Leisure (10 a.m.–1:50 p.m.)

💪 Free Aquatic Fitness Class: Thurs, Aug 28: 9–9:50 a.m.

🎾 Free Racquetball: Wed, Aug 27: 8 a.m.–8 p.m. (40-min sessions, call 709-576-8499 to book)

Some furrriendly reminders from our pal Sarah!

🎄🐾Here are some top safety tips when it comes to having a safe, happy holiday with your dog.

1. Keep food out of reach. Make sure there’s nothing left on counters that your dog can reach. Consider blocking off access to your kitchen/areas where food may be kept. Ensure garbage cans are securely out of reach.

2. If needed, keep your dog on a leash connected to you to ensure close supervision at all times. I recommend doing this if you have a young puppy.

3. Use pens or crates to keep your pups in a safe place during Christmas parties.

4. Ensure your pups needs are being met by providing them activities to do to keep busy. Utilize feeding enrichment like frozen kongs, licky mats, snuffle mats, treat dispensing toys or puzzles or favorite chews.

5. Take your pup on a nice sniffari walk. Bring them to a new space and let them sniff to their hearts content. This provides mental stimulation that can help burn some of that energy and make for a calmer dog.

6. Remember that the holiday hustle and bustle can be stressful for your pets. Make sure that you are looking out for them and providing them with appropriate outlets and safe spaces to go if they are feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated.

An update on the St. John’s area vets working together to keep emergency services available! 🩷 Love this!

📢 Important Update for Our Pet Community 📢

In response to VSC's announcement, we are introducing a shared emergency on-call group for after-hours emergencies from 7pm - 8am daily, starting July 2nd at 7pm.

This group is a collaboration among Sunrise Animal Hospital, Beachy Cove Animal Hospital, Avalon Animal Hospital, Torbay Road Animal Hospital, Terra Nova Veterinary Clinic, Baccalieu Trail Animal Hospital, Topsail Road Veterinary Clinic, Paradise Animal Hospital, Kenmount Road Animal Hospital, CBS Animal Hospital, Memorial Animal Hospital, and St. John's Veterinary Hospital.

VSC will continue to handle emergencies during the day from 8am - 7pm.

For after-hours emergencies, please call your primary clinic and you will be forwarded to the emergency line. You will then be triaged and directed to the clinic that is on-call. If you don't have a specific clinic, you can still call our line and say so; you will be directed to the hospital on-call.

It’s going to be a hot week. Please keep your dogs home, inside, where they will be cooler and safe from the hot sun. Walk them at night when the pavement won’t burn their little paw pads. And for the love of God, don’t leave them in a vehicle.

If the back of your hand/underside of your wrist can’t push against the pavement for a full 5 seconds, it’s way too hot for your Puppo’s feet!

Please be extra careful with our high UG indexes, the heat wave, and this bright sun!
