🐾 Happy World Veterinary Day!

Today we’re celebrating every single person who makes veterinary care possible, because it’s never just one role, it’s a whole team working together to care for pets when they need it most.

From the moment you call, walk through the door, or rush in during an emergency, you’re met by a team that’s moving as one:

📞 Receptionists who keep things calm when everything feels urgent
🩺 Technicians and assistants who are hands-on in every part of patient care
👩‍⚕️ Veterinarians who diagnose, treat, and make critical decisions
💙 Everyone behind the scenes who keeps the hospital going 24/7

Being a walk in urgent care means being ready for anything, at any time, and it only works because of the people who show up with skill, compassion, and teamwork every day.

To our team, and veterinary teams everywhere: thank you for what you do. 🏆

And to pet parents, thank you for trusting us with your family.

🐾 It’s Hairball Awareness Day!

Hairballs might seem like a normal part of cat life, but they’re not always harmless.

At our urgent care hospital, we’ve treated cases where hairballs became serious enough to require surgery to remove them. While that’s not the norm, it’s a reminder that ongoing or severe symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.

Keep an eye out for:
• Frequent or unproductive retching
• Vomiting without producing a hairball
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy or constipation

Regular brushing, hydration, and hairball-support diets can help, but if your cat seems uncomfortable or symptoms persist, it’s time to get them checked.

📍 We’re here when your pet needs care, no appointment necessary.

Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week! 📞

If you’ve ever called our urgent care vet, chances are the first hero you met wasn’t in scrubs, it was our reception team.

They’re the calm voice during chaos, the masters of multitasking, and the ones who can go from “How can I help you?” to “We’re going to get your pet seen ASAP, tell me what’s going on” in about 0.2 seconds.

A few things they do daily:
📞 Answer urgent calls while keeping everyone calm
🐶 Triage concerns before you even walk through the door
📋 Juggle appointments, emergencies, and a never-ending to-do list

We truly couldn’t do urgent care without them holding the front line together with patience, kindness, and a whole lot of skill.

So here’s to the receptionists: the real MVPs of veterinary medicine. 🏆🐾

Drop a 💙 to show them some love!

🐾 It’s National Pet ID Week!

Let’s talk about something simple that can make a huge difference in an emergency: pet ID.

Because as much as we love the idea of our pets being adventurous explorers… we’d prefer they come home with stories, not stress.

A few quick reminders from your urgent care vet team:
🔖 Make sure tags are up to date
📱 Double-check your microchip info (yes, it still needs updating!)
🚪 Secure collars & harnesses—“Houdini pets” are real
📞 Include a phone number that actually gets answered

We’ve seen it all, dogs who take themselves for solo neighbourhood tours, and cats who suddenly develop Olympic-level escaping skills. Having proper ID can turn a scary moment into a quick reunion.

Your pet’s best accessory? A reliable ID tag. Stylish and lifesaving. 💙

Wishing everyone in Ottawa a wonderful Easter weekend!

While you’re enjoying the festivities, please remember that our doors at Galaxy Vets are wide open. Whether it’s a holiday, a weekend, or a regular Tuesday, we are here for you 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

We want your pets to stay safe while you celebrate! Please be mindful of common Easter hazards that should stay far away from furry friends:

Chocolate: Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and cats.

Xylitol: This artificial sweetener (often found in sugar-free candies) is extremely dangerous.

Easter Lilies: These are highly toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure.

Plastic Grass & Foil: If ingested, these can cause serious intestinal blockages.

If your pet manages to sneak a treat they shouldn't have, or if you notice anything out of the ordinary, don't hesitate to reach out. Our urgent care team is ready to help with any emergency needs to ensure your pet gets back to their happy, healthy self.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition, but the good news is that it is 100% preventable!

How it Starts:

It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to transmit heartworm larvae into a dog's bloodstream. Over several months, these larvae grow into adult worms that can reach up to 12 inches long, living in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

The Early Signs:

In the beginning, many dogs show no symptoms at all. As the infection progresses, you might notice:

•A persistent, mild cough
•Tiring easily after exercise
•Decreased appetite or weight loss

Prevention is Key!!

Treating adult heartworms is a long, difficult, and expensive process for both the pet and the owner. Year-round prevention is the gold standard of care. Monthly preventatives work by eliminating larvae before they have the chance to mature into adult worms.

Don’t Skip the Test!!

Annual heartworm blood testing is vital, even if your pet is on a regular prevention schedule. It ensures your dog is clear and healthy before continuing their medication.

Talk to your vet team today to make sure your pup is protected for the season ahead!
