(French follows - le français suit) – Heartbreaking News – In early July 2025, Coal, always brave and gentle, began to lose his appetite more frequently. By the evening of July 7, his condition had worsened noticeably. The next morning, he was brought to see his oncologist, Dr. Krista Gower, at Capital City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital. After a compassionate and thorough evaluation, it became heartbreakingly clear: Coal’s condition had become grievous and irremediable, beyond what love, medicine, or therapies could ease. It was time to let him go.

Surrounded by his devoted human dad, Danny Taurozzi, and his younger adoptive feline brother, Winston, Coal passed peacefully on July 8, 2025, with Veterinary Assistance in Dying (VAiD), a final act of mercy and dignity for a life so deeply cherished.

Coal had been diagnosed with salivary gland carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, which later metastasized to his lungs. Despite this, he was able to enjoy nearly a year of good quality of life, thanks to the extraordinary care he received and unwavering love.

Danny shared:

“It was a very tough day, and I am a little bit broken. Saying goodbye to Coal was heartwrenching, but it was the humane thing to do. The tears will flow, and the sadness will linger for some time. I will miss you, little buddy...”

Coal was a sentient feline family member. He was Canada’s last surviving Parliament Hill Cat, a living thread to a cherished chapter in our country’s history. For those who knew him, followed him, and loved him from near and far, Coal was a national symbol of compassion, resilience, grace, and quiet strength. He was a feline gentleman with a heart of gold.

Danny would like to express his most profound and most heartfelt thanks to the remarkable professionals who helped give Coal more time and, most importantly, quality time. So many compassionate people walked alongside Coal on this journey, including:

Dr. Dana Clark, Family Doctor
VCA Canada Alta Vista Animal Hospital(Ottawa)

Dr. Krista Gower, Oncologist
Capital City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital (Kanata)

Nancy Couillard, Registered Veterinary Technician, Certified Physical Rehabilitation Specialist
Go Mobile Pet Rehab Services (Ottawa region)

Dr. Sarah Slater, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
Rideau River Animal Hospital (Ottawa)

Dr. Rona Sherebrin, Integrative and Holistic Veterinary Medicine (Eastern & Western approaches)
Toronto Integrative Animal Health (Virtual Consultations)

Coal was more than a beloved companion.
He was a symbol of enduring love, quiet dignity,
and a gentle presence that touched the hearts of countless people. He was a feline gentleman with a heart of gold.
He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Goodbye Coal.

Danny a partagé :

« Ce fut une journée très difficile, et je me sens un peu brisé. Dire au revoir à Coal a été déchirant, mais c’était la chose la plus humaine à faire. Les larmes vont couler, et la tristesse restera longtemps. Tu vas me manquer, mon petit bonhomme... »

VCA Canada Alta Vista Animal Hospital (Ottawa)

Dre Krista Gower, oncologue
Capital City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital (Kanata)

Nancy Couillard, technicienne en santé animale agréée, spécialiste certifiée en réadaptation physique
Go Mobile Pet Rehab Services (région d’Ottawa)

Dre Sarah Slater, acupunctrice vétérinaire certifiée
Rideau River Animal Hospital (Ottawa)

Dre Rona Sherebrin, médecine vétérinaire intégrative et holistique (approches orientale et occidentale)
Toronto Integrative Animal Health(consultations virtuelles)

☀️ HEATSTROKE IN PETS: KNOW THE SIGNS 🐾

Ottawa is in the middle of a major heat wave, and today is far too hot to be walking your dog — even short outings can be dangerous.

Our team has already seen multiple cases of heatstroke this season. It’s a life-threatening emergency that can escalate quickly, especially in extreme temperatures.
Pets don’t sweat like we do — they rely on panting to cool themselves, and in this kind of heat, that’s not enough.

🚨 Signs of heatstroke:
• Excessive panting or drooling 😰
• Weakness or collapse
• Vomiting or diarrhea 🤢
• Pale or bright red gums
• Disorientation or seizures
• Elevated body temperature 🌡️

🐶 Some pets are at even higher risk:
• Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like pugs and bulldogs
• Seniors and puppies
• Overweight animals
• Pets left in parked cars or without shade 🚗

⚠️ But the truth is — all pets are at risk in this heat.

💡 Prevention tips:
• Walk only early morning or late evening
• Keep pets indoors in a cool space 🧊
• Offer fresh water regularly
• Skip the walk altogether if it’s too hot
• Never leave your pet in a vehicle — even for a minute

If you suspect heatstroke, get to a veterinary clinic immediately.

Let’s keep our furry friends safe out there 💛

8 STEPS THAT SAVE LIVES IN A WILDLIFE EMERGENCY

They are at the mercy of their finders....
We see lives lost all the time because the animal’s finder lacked either the knowledge or the motivation to help during a critical time.

Be the finder that saves a life.

1. STOP - be willing to stop for a moment and observe the situation. If you think an animal is harmed or in danger, take the time to pull over or stop what you are doing to really take a look at the situation. If you think the animal may be deceased, watch for a minute to see if it is still breathing.

2. BE SAFE - don’t put yourself in a situation where the animal may bite or scratch you. This may not only harm you, but may result in the animal having to be euthanized for rabies testing. This happens more than you think.

3. ACT QUICKLY - If something doesn’t seem right, don’t wait hours or days to contact someone. You can always call a local wildlife rehabilitator and ask if the animal needs assistance if you aren’t sure.

4. CALL AROUND - Don’t give up if the first person you call doesn’t respond. Call your local wildlife rehabilitator, animal control, the Environmental police or the police department. Leave messages if they don’t answer. Be the animal’s advocate. Most state websites have a section where permitted wildlife rehabilitators are listed.

5. WARM, DARK, QUIET - If you can safely contain the animal, keep it in a warm, dark and quiet place until you can get it to someone who can help. Don’t play music in the car if you are transporting it. Don’t keep the animal near pets or children.

6. DON’T OFFER FOOD OR LIQUIDS - Do not offer food or water. In many circumstances, giving food or water can actually make things worse. For example, if an animal is hypothermic, its body can not process anything until it’s temperature is normalized.

7. BE WILLING TO DRIVE - Be willing to take the animal to where it needs to go. Don’t wait until someone is able to come pick it up. That can waste valuable time and could be the difference between life and death.

8. CONSIDER DONATING - We know it’s not your pet and not your responsibility. Wildlife rehabilitators do not get paid by the state to care for wildlife and donate their time to help these animals in need. Often, they use their personal funds to cover the cost of care. The more funding they have, the more they can provide for the wildlife in their care. Consider that the majority of people who drop off animals do not donate. If you can spare it, it will be appreciated. However, even if you can’t donate, wildlife rehabilitators don’t expect it and will still be happy to help an animal in need. Don’t let that stop you from getting the animal help.

PLEASE HELP US GET THE WORD OUT! A finder’s quick response to an animal in need can often be the difference between life and death! 🙏🙏🙏
