Chi Garden

Chi Garden Farm-fresh vegetables, wild ferments - Kimchi and mountain dry styles, sauerkraut, mushroom oil, etc. Chi Garden's page. Chi Garden is an education farm.

Chi in Chinese or Japanese Kanji, has its origin from a common herb and much loved veg in some regions of these two countries, called dokudami or 蕺草 JICAO (Houttuynia cordata) that literally means "poison blocking plant”. We are an ecological small market garden, specialize in Asian veggies, herbs and raw fermented products such as Kimchi, mountain dry ferment, sauerkraut and chili sauce. Mushroom

oil and other oil-based preservation. We are a certified organic farm business (by Eco-cert certificate at https://shorturl.at/flGV4). We provide natural farming, fermentation, and food education sessions to groups and community centers, at our farm or client's locations. We cater veggie-forward small events. Email us to arrange. These are Burbank plums (cling stone Asian plums on myrobalan rootstock.)
Perfectly ripen but not overly ripe. No blemish. Firm and smooth.
I am always astonished at how much salt it takes to make umeboshi work (and safe!) - a whopping 18%!! Purple perilla and shiso leaves will go in later, to enhance the colour and flavour. Three years ago when we planted these plum trees I had the sole purpose of making umeboshi. But the taste and the look and aroma of these plums is deeply touching, lacking of another word to describe it. Asian plums rock! Thank you to generational plum breeders, and special thank to American plum breeder Luther Burbank (1849-1926) for all the horticultural skills to allow us to enjoy them today. This cultivar was grafted onto American plum rootstock back in 1888, and we got them from silvercreek nursery near waterloo.
Will try to graft a bunch for next spring season so more people get to grow this beautiful cultivar!

So appreciative to a fellow soy crafter in Beijing for opening their workshop so I could get a holistic experience of their organic nigari tofu making process. I learned so much and feel humbled by the generosity of this fellow maker and the community spirit!

Our Story

We are a small ecological farm situated on the Green Belt of Ottawa, on the JustFood Farm. We have been farming since 2015 and grow certified organic vegetables, especially salad greens. The Chi Garden produces the most diverse salad mix in the region. On average our salad mix has over 20 varieties of fresh leaves and flowers from lettuce, purple bokchoy*, beets green, arugula, asparagus lettuce green*, chrysanthemum green*, pea shoots, sedum green*, goji berry leaves*, radish green, lamb’s quarter, Vietnam coriander*, wild purslane and edible flowers from Chinese kale*, wild mustard & sweet pea, and more!

We sell and deliver locally, and have a weekly farm stand at the Just Food Farm Stand. We make fermented vegetables such as kimchi, ginger-infused garlic scape. Our farm stand also sells fresh savory crepe with greens, ferments, and mushroom oil wrapped inside!
