The Growcer

The Growcer Manufacturer of modular hydroponic farms allowing you to locally grow and sell fresh crops year-round, regardless of the climate.

Growcer is a socially minded company empowering communities to grow fresh, hyper-local produce year-round through its hydroponic modular farms. Growcer was created to make growing healthy food year-round in any climate possible, based on the firsthand experience of our founders in Nunavut in 2015. Our growing technology was first deployed in food insecure, remote communities, but we’ve expanded to

partner with schools, nonprofits, and non-remote communities who see value in growing food locally. To date, communities and institutions have used Growcer farms to grow more than a million servings of local, nutritious greens across Canada.

It's harvest season! The Growcer team joined the Ottawa Food Bank to lend a hand for a farm shift.

We harvested peppers (40 boxes of peppers!) which will make their way across various food programs across Ottawa.

It was amazing to also see how much food the Ottawa Food Bank has harvested to date.

During the summer time, food programs are flush with fresh produce thanks to the generosity of farmers and the hard work on behalf of volunteers at Ottawa Food Bank's farm.

However, we have to remember the other 8 months of the year. That's where Growcer's solution really shines, enabling organizations to grow and store a steady supply food year-round. We've heard from food organizations that a predictable food supply allows them to plan and invest in long term solutions, and also breathe a sign of relief instead of figuring out the ever-changing logistics puzzle.

“We didn’t initially think we were going to participate in the bid. But ultimately, we know there’s a strong business in modular containerized farming. We wanted to send a signal to the market that [the Freight Farms bankruptcy] is the consequence of bad decisions of one company, not of the industry as a whole.”

Read this Q&A with Growcer's CEO Corey Ellis about the acquisition of Freight Farms and the future of container farming ⬇️

In this Q&A, Growcer CEO Corey Ellis explains how he plans to build on the promise of container farming for hyper-local fresh food supply.

One in four Canadians, more than 10 million people, are struggling to put food on the table.

This is the highest level ever recorded in this country, driven by rising costs and limited access to affordable food.

But it's not all bad news.

Innovative organizations are collaborating across public and private sectors to bring more local food to plates, like The Ottawa Mission.

In 2025, the City of Kingston declared food insecurity an emergency after finding out that one third of the population suffers from some form of food insecurity.

✳️ This was Councillor Conny Glenn’s “why” to get serious about a food strategy for the city.

The council sought an approach that could deliver immediate relief while building long-term resilience.

The result?

🌱 With just $80,000 in annual parking fine revenue redirected through their Fines for Food initiative, Kingston launched a modular vertical farm project with the capacity to grow $200,000 worth of fresh, nutrient-dense leafy greens every year.

These are ingredients that local food organizations struggle to afford, store, and can rarely source consistently - especially in the winter months.

💡 By growing them locally, Kingston gives its partners access to the most in-demand produce, without the spoilage, cost, or supply chain guesswork.
