Retractable leashes can be handy, but they’re not great for every situation. They work best in open, quiet areas where your dog has space to safely sniff and explore without lots of people, cars, or other dogs around. In busy spots, the long cord can tangle, trip someone, or make it harder to keep your dog close if something unexpected happens. If you do use one, keep a good grip on the handle, lock it to a shorter length when needed, and think of it as a tool for extra freedom—not a replacement for good leash training.
