As we’ve welcomed August, we find ourselves right in the middle of Ontario’s heartworm season – Right now we have two Cedarview Animal Hospital patients, who both reside in Barrhaven, undergoing treatment for heartworm disease. While the prevalence of this disease in Ottawa and surrounding areas, relative to areas with a year-round hot climate, may be lesser, but it certainly is NOT zero. As owners bring their pets along on their travels, organizations rescue deserving animals from hot climate areas, and our own native wildlife – namely foxes and coyotes, who are susceptible to rampant infection – continue to co-exist with us, risk continues to increase for our pets at home. We witness firsthand the profound effect that these diagnoses have on the families who receive them, so we continue to push for the safety of our patients.

Canine heartworm (Dirofilara immitis) is spread via mosquitos. A mosquito will bite an infected host, and pick up microfilaria, AKA microscopic baby heartworms. Generally, if the temperature has remained above 14°C for more than 2 weeks, then the conditions are favourable for microfilaria to mature into infective larvae. If that same mosquito bites your pet, the infective larvae could be passed directly into your pet’s bloodstream, later developing into full-grown heartworms that clog their heart, lungs, and blood vessels. These nasty parasites are far more costly to treat than they are to prevent – as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Our Story

Since opening its doors in the summer of 2009, Cedarview Animal Hospital has been providing a range of veterinary services and health care for Ottawa pet owners’ dog and cat companions.

We’re pet owners too, so we know how important your connection is with your pet. We emphasize prevention and early detection as well as healthy nutrition and exercise, and we are certified in sports medicine, rehabilitation and pain management.

Our clinic focuses exclusively on dogs and cats. We provide a variety of services throughout the life journey of dog and cat companion animals, from the tiniest kitten to the tallest Great Dane, from Siamese, Persians and tabbies to Chihuahuas, retrievers and mutts—and everything in between.

Our goal is to help all pet owners continue to enjoy the laughter and love that our dog and cat companions bring home to us.
