Heat stroke in dogs can be life-threatening, rapidly causing organ failure and death if not treated immediately. Recognizing the early warning signs such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and disorientation, can mean the difference between life and death for your pet.

As we move into the warmer temperatures, remember to always provide fresh water and shade for your dog, exercise them in the morning and/or evening when it’s cooler out, and keep watch for signs of heatstroke. NEVER leave your dog in a vehicle.

🐾 June is National Pet Preparedness Month and here at Sage & Hound Wellness, it's one of our favourite reminders that caring for our pets means planning ahead, too.

As a community, we're so good at looking out for each other β€” and that includes our four-legged family members. Whether it's a sudden storm, a power outage, or an unexpected evacuation, having a simple plan in place can make all the difference.

Here are a few things we recommend keeping ready for your pet:
βœ… 3–5 days of food and fresh water
βœ… Copies of vaccination records and any medications
βœ… A sturdy carrier or leash easily accessible
βœ… A familiar toy or blanket to help reduce stress
βœ… Your vet's contact info β€” and a backup emergency vet nearby

Not sure where to start? We're always happy to chat if you want to connect.

Your pets trust you completely β€” a little prep goes a long way. 🐢🐱

Article 2 of the Dog Natural Health Series is live β€” and this one might be the most useful thing you read all week if you have a dog. 🐢

It's all about nutrition: the foundation of everything when it comes to your dog's long-term health.

Here's something most people don't realize: a lot of the common health issues dogs deal with β€” dull coats, itchy skin, low energy, recurring digestive problems β€” are directly connected to what's in their bowl every day. Not just genetics. Not just bad luck.

In this article, I break down:

βœ… How to read a dog food label and actually understand what you're looking at
βœ… The ingredients to look for β€” and the ones to avoid
βœ… 7 whole foods that are safe AND nourishing to add to your dog's meals
βœ… The foods that are dangerous (some of these still surprise people!)
βœ… A simple 10-day method for transitioning their diet without upsetting their stomach

I also included two easy-to-reference tables you can save and come back to β€” one for safe foods, one for foods to always avoid.

This isn’t about overhauling everything overnight. It’s about making one more informed choice than you made yesterday.

#🐾 Did you know? Some eye-opening facts about pet emergencies...

As a dog owner, you probably do everything right β€” the vet visits, the walks, the healthy food. But emergencies don't give us a heads-up. Here are a few things that might surprise you:

1 in 4 pets will face a medical emergency in their lifetime
4 min is how long the brain can go without oxygen before damage begins
< 10 min is often the average wait time to reach emergency vet care

That gap between when something happens and when professional help arrives? That's where you come in. Knowing how to perform CPR, clear an airway, control bleeding, or recognize signs of shock can be the difference that saves your dog's life.

The good news β€” these skills are not hard to learn. They just need to be learned before you need them.

Not all calcium powders are created equal, and this one matters 🦴

Here's a quick guide: Calcium carbonate (like ground eggshell) is the most affordable and widely used β€” great for everyday home-cooked meals.

Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed and gentler on sensitive tummies β€” ideal for dogs with digestive issues.

Bone meal brings calcium AND phosphorus together, so it's best used when meat content is high.

Matching the right calcium to your dog's needs is one of the most loving things you can do for their long-term health. 🀍

Your pup won't stop scratching and it breaks you.

🐾 Before reaching for the antihistamines, try a little nettle leaf β€” it's one of nature's gentlest antihistamines and works beautifully to calm seasonal itching from the inside out. You can steep it as a tea, let it cool, and add it to their bowl. Start small, watch how they do, and always check with your vet if itching is severe. Small steps, big love. πŸ’š

Are you prepared to assist your dog in an emergency? As the first responder, YOU can make a critical difference between injury and timely veterinary care.

I'll be hosting a comprehensive 8-hour training that covers CPR, resuscitation, and the Heimlich maneuver. For $169, you'll learn how to accurately assess vital signs and identify emergencies such as bloat, shock, poisoning, fractures, torn pads, or broken claws.

The course also addresses scenarios like vehicle accidents, livestock injuries, bites, burns, stings, tick removal, and skunk encounters. Additionally, gain knowledge of how to recognize common household and environmental toxins, along with many other vital skills.

🐢 This is why I'm bringing Canine CPR & First Aid training to Orillia.

A little while ago, my dog Rowan was doing what he loves most β€” exploring outside and chewing on a stick. In an instant, a piece lodged in his throat and he started choking.

My heart stopped.

I acted on pure instinct and managed to scoop it out with my finger β€” but the whole time I was terrified. Was I doing the right thing? Was I making it worse? Was I pushing it further down? I had no idea. I just knew I had to do something.

Rowan was okay. But I wasn't β€” not for a while after. That moment shook me, because I realized how lucky we were, and how unprepared I actually was for something that could so easily happen again.

I have active outdoor dogs. Sticks, water, wildlife, rough play β€” the possibilities for an emergency don't exactly shrink when your dogs love adventure. So I made a decision: I was going to get trained properly, and then I was going to share those skills with as many fellow dog owners as I could.

Because no one should have to stand there, hands shaking, hoping they're doing the right thing.

πŸ“… My Canine CPR & Emergency First Aid course is coming to Orillia on June 20, 2026. It's hands-on, beginner-friendly, and could make all the difference for your dog one day.
