Hey everyone!
Unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances with my health, I will be pulling back on my workload for the time being. This means no new clients or new board and trains will be accepted until further notice.
I know this definitely sucks but I currently need to focus on my health, my own dog and the dogs I’m currently working with within the service dog program.

Wishing you all the best,
Sydney & Astrid 💚

I know updates on here have been lacking! I’ve been focusing my energy on working with the boarding dogs and trying to create a better business plan for the new year! So I’ll try to cram all the relevant updates in here and if you have any unanswered questions, just let me know 😊
So to start, we moved! 🏠
We’re now located in rural Fenelon Falls (not too far from where we were before). This doesn’t effect training as I’ll still be seeing current clients and boarding dogs here (many of you have already been here actually!). I’ll be updating the address for the business as soon as I can so no one gets confused. We have a lot more space here and aren’t directly on a highway anymore, so that’s a real pro!
In addition to this, the structure of the business is changing this year.
I will no longer be offering pet services. As much as I have loved meeting and working with so many of you, pet services were never going to be the main focus of the company. The only pet related service that will continue is the online courses, since these are applicable to all dogs. This year the service dog training sector of the company grew exponentially. Between service dogs that require board and trains, sessions, assessments, etc. I simply don’t have time to consistently offer pet services. Service dogs were always the main passion when this company was started.
So this year, the service dog program and the private service dog clients will be the main focus.
This year I will also be continuing to expand my knowledge and career as a detection dog trainer and handler. I hope to start growing the detection specific portion of Prowess in the next 1-2 years.
Finally, new clients and boarding dogs will not be accepted until February 2022. Training always becomes inconsistent during the holidays so I prefer to take that time to fit in the program clients that truly need me around the clock and to give everyone a break to enjoy the holidays. This also ensures that new clients can have a consistent start after the holidays. I also want to use the holiday break this year to make all necessary changes to the website, social media pages, etc. So you’ll see those adjust over the next couple months.
I will continue to take names and contact information for any interested service dog clients over the next couple months and will start contacting those people to reconnect in the new year.
I thank you all endlessly for making this year Prowess’s most successful year and for your support. I couldn’t have ever imagined I would meet so many beautiful people and dogs and I feel so privileged to be apart of so many wonderful journeys.
Thank you for supporting Prowess and myself and I’m so looking forward to another amazing year. 💚
Stay safe.
With much love & gratitude,
Sydney & Astrid

Hey everyone! Just a heads up that I’ll be out of town until the beginning of next week. We’re competing Saturday and travelling around the competition for the long weekend. So the usual work travel routine applies, I may open messages and texts but not respond during this time but fear not, I’m not ignoring you! I’ll catch up with any outstanding messages once I’m settled back in at home.
Have a wonderful long weekend everyone! And enjoy some pictures of adorable golden babies from our temperament test with today! 💚

And just like that, summer is coming to a close! 😭 Hopefully you and your pups had some wonderful adventures and are continuing to stay safe!
With that, I wanted to give some updates because I know the situation has been ever changing for all small businesses.
So for starters, pet services are remaining closed at this time. I do not have a definite date for reopening and didn’t expect it to remain closed this long. However, I still don’t feel comfortable doing many of the new intakes that have been requested, sessions, etc. even while following all guidelines. The priority at this time continues to be the service dog clients that rely on my assistance consistently. Putting these high risk clients potentially in danger is not something I will ever be comfortable with. So as much as I DEEPLY appreciate the constant interest in my pet services, they remain closed until further notice.
Board and trains remain unaffected and continue to run as normal. On that note however, board and train spots have officially been booked for the rest of 2021. As of now, I will be accepting names and contact information for a 2022 waitlist only.
As always, I can’t thank you all enough for the support that Prowess has received this year and it’s been so amazing getting to grow the business more and more with all of you. 💚💚
Enjoy this picture of Astrid riding in a canoe for the first time recently! Go enjoy the final days of summer folks!
Stay safe & healthy,
Sydney & Astrid 🐾

As I’m sure many of you have noticed, temperatures are starting to rise. For many dogs this is a nice change, it means swimming and more time outside! But for puppies who have never experienced an extreme shift to warmer temperatures, this can be very difficult. Puppies experience a plethora or “firsts” in their first year of life, and that includes weather! Many owners forget that their puppy was only 12 weeks old or simply not around at all last summer. This dramatic shift in temperature may have zero effect on your older dogs which can make your puppies reaction seem out of no where and even more concerning. Don’t fear though, heat sickness is common in puppies their very first summer!
Now what do I mean by that? Well, many puppies the first summer they experience have a couple days of intense sickness while their body is still adjusting. Things like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc. are all very common and usually very sudden during their first heat wave.
So what do you do? Rush your dog to the vet? Well not so fast actually.
- keep a close eye on your puppy and monitor their state
- give them small controlled portions of water often
- keep them settled and avoid heavy exercise
- don’t shelter them from the heat! They need to experience the heat to adjust rather than being in air conditioning all day, so stick to the windows open rather than heavy A/C and hang out outside in the shade for brief periods
- keep an eye on the colour of your dogs gums! They should pink (think of when you poke a sunburn) and if they go pale, white or grey it’s time to call a vet asap!
- feed them in small portions throughout the day only once they seem to have stopped vomiting

Overall, your puppies first heatwave can be really scary! Especially since most people don’t talk about it. But fear not, they will adjust in a day or two and be just fine. Following years will be breeze once they’re adjusted too, so don’t worry. Keep a close eye on your pup and take them to the vet if they get worse or you notice them not recovering at all after a day or two!

*I am not a vet and this post is just based off experience and knowledge from vets/canine professionals*

Please read ⚠️
Unfortunately due to the never ending lockdown situation here in Ontario and the consistently high case number, I have made the following decisions.
Until further notice, I will not be accepting any new clients unless it is for strictly online sessions. I will also be suspending all pet training and focusing solely on the existing service dog program clients/service dog related clients. Board and trains for these clients will remain unaffected.
As the case numbers remain high even in my own area (not a hot spot) I want to make sure I am doing my part to help slow the spread. I also want to make sure I am able to devote my attention to the teams who need it the most and the most frequently during this time. Keeping everyone safe, especially with so many of my clients (and myself) falling into the "at risk" category, has always been a top priority.
If you are interested in training with me once these restrictions are lifted, I'm happy to chat, do online/phone consultations and remain in contact for the future. However at this time, I feel more comfortable adding these restrictions in order to prioritize everyone's safety.
I appreciate each and every one of you and the immense support that you have continued to give myself and all of the Prowess teams during the past year and a half of craziness. If you're unsure if a service you utilize or are planning to utilize is still happening, please do not hesitate to message me and I will be happy to answer any questions.
Stay safe everyone.
With love and gratitude,
Sydney and Astrid 💚💛

Hello everyone!
I know my response rate for many of your calls/emails/messages, etc. has been fairly slow lately! I apologize and please bear with me as I get my own health complications under control and work on finishing out my school semester.
In addition to this, the ever changing pandemic situation here in Ontario has obviously made things challenging.
I appreciate each and every one of you and I promise I'm working to get through the sea of emails, messages and voicemails that have come through recently!
You're all so amazing and I am extremely grateful for the support and huge amount of interest and referrals to Prowess recently 💚

Much love,
Sydney & Astrid
