Alternatives to Chemical Dewormers
A wild horse will find the root, bark, herb, dirt, or flower that will keep its body (and intestines) in balance. Because of the confinement of our domestic horses we need to supply them with elements that they can’t get from pasture.
Traditional Chinese Medicine alternatives to dewormers are two formulas: Equine Dewormer One and Equine Dewormer Two. They are non-toxic dried herbs to help with the treatment of conditions arising from worm infestation (small and large ascariasis, bots, strongyles, pinworms). Dewormer One is required when there is a thick coating on the tongue and is beneficial for symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, sudden weight loss, lethargy, difficult urination, and persistent fever or inflammation. Dewormer Two is used for long-term complications such as abdominal bloating with pain, digestive obstructions, bleeding, and severe weight loss. Dewormer One can be safely used on mares that are in foal or nursing. Dewormer Two should not be used during pregnancy.
If a chemical dewormer is used, Equine Dewormer One can be given on the same day or afterwards. It will not interfere with the paralyzing effects of the chemical product, and will keep a proper intestinal balance between alkalinity and acidity.
From the TCM point of view, the territory allows life to be welcome or unwelcome. If the intestines are out of balance certain worms will strive in this type of environment and will multiply much faster.
It is now apparent that chemical dewormers need to be made stronger to deal with the resistance of parasites. Remember that the paralyzers in these products are processed in the blood through the kidneys. In TCM the kidneys are in charge of the spine where the nervous system originates. As a result, your horse may have difficulty to work for two to three days after being given a chemical dewormer. Watch for signs such as soreness in the back, wobbling (not because of a virus but because of an abundance of chemical dewormers), and increasing resistance due to the introduction of a daily dewormer. No horse should be ridden after chemical deworming. But with the TCM herbal dewormer you can enjoy a safe ride with your horse after treatment.
The best time to deworm your horse is during full moon as the parasites are the most active at that time.
Another consideration is the effect of dewormers in our eco systems. The ingredients from the chemical dewormers will end up in our fields, water, and eventually in our food.
Remember to take a break.
Sit on your horse,
close your eyes and take a deep breath.
Enjoy and appreciate it.
