Playing & Learning as we go

True words.

Jumping is a gateway behaviour that leads to the development of other behaviours.
If jumping is not diminished by the time a dog gets his adult teeth at about six months, more behaviours will start to attach, such as excessive barking and reactivity.

A well-socialized dog will always approach on a curve, never directly.
Like most animals.
Direct and forceful approaches
automatically make another dog think THREAT!
Their mother was trying to teach a soft approach when the puppies would run to her for milk.
She would often growl or snap if they came on too abruptly… making them slow their roll when approaching.
and then they come to us and we allow it 😬
You see puppies that stay with their mother until they are six months old (you see this often in the stray community and then rescued)
They have no forwardness, don’t jump, or aren’t mouthy. Everything is absorbed and thought through before action. Their mother taught them that coming at things too hot is dangerous.

Until we get our hands on them.

Jumping is more than just behavior, It’s about teaching safety as well.

My heart goes out to the Nickerson family and to the town that experienced this horrific event.
I hope this video can provide education on guardian breeds and the impact of having two or more of them.
If your dog is looking out a window from a couch all day, staring at stimulus, you are making a guardian dog. You are potentially reinforcing that behaviour.
You know how Michael Jordan got good at basketball? He played every day, for hours.
You know how your guardian dog is so good at barking at everything? You let them do it every day for hours.
If you can’t control the environment, set them up to succeed. For example, crate them when you are gone. Crating is more than just a babysitter against chewing and destroying the house. It’s also good for suppressing a guardian dog that barks or stares out of windows when you’re gone.
If you have them in your backyard, even in a fenced-in area, and they show a forwardness to outside surroundings, please be there to give them feedback for that unwanted behaviour.
They should never be unattended if they show a forwardness outside.

Please, please guide them!

What are your thoughts on the event?

Here’s to a year of Board & Trains in Ontario!

One year ago, I relocated my established business of 18 years to Ontario, where I had to forge my own path. This was something I didn't have to do since I started my business back home in 2008. This move pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a business owner.

Over the past year, we've welcomed board and train dogs from Massachusetts, Virginia, Michigan, Nova Scotia, and locally. Whether you traveled five minutes or 20 hours, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for trusting us with your dog and allowing me to continue doing what I love. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Our first pack walk in Ontario, It’s been a year in the making of building a small community here.
A monthly meeting/check in where we can talk about training, support each other, socialize (god knows I need it) and work on making our dogs their best selves. Thank you for all who came out!

Walking or in a dog‘s eyes, migrating
is the best way to form a relationship with your dog. Let’s breakdown how to make the most of your walk together.

•”Watch me” starts the walks

•”Mother Henning” to get intuned with your dog

•”Follow me mode “ before proceeding

•”Auto sits” at end of the driveway, crosswalks, road crossings

•Lie down and observe- Absorb surroundings instead of acting upon

•Jump on something scary but safe- Confidence & trust building

•Pace changes-To help with engagement and focus
