Your dog’s walk is about more than exercise, it’s about exploration.

A dog’s sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than a human’s. With around 300 million scent receptors in their nose, they experience the world in ways we can only imagine.

So the next time your dog stops to investigate a patch of grass, remember: they’re gathering information, exploring their surroundings, and engaging their brain.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let them sniff.

Thunderstorms can be more than just loud noises for pets.

Many dogs and cats experience real anxiety during storms, from pacing and shaking to hiding or trying to escape. Knowing the signs early can help keep your pet safe and more comfortable during stressful weather.

Creating a calm environment, offering reassurance, and recognizing when extra support may be needed can make a big difference.

If your pet struggles with storm anxiety, the team at Norgate Animal Hospital is here to help.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through water and soil contaminated by infected wildlife, and it is a genuine seasonal risk for dogs who spend time outdoors on the North Shore.

Trail puddles, creek crossings, and areas frequented by raccoons, rats, and deer are exactly the kind of environments where Lepto exposure happens. Our trails and green spaces are worth using. They are also the habitat where this circulates.

There is a vaccine, and whether it makes sense for your dog depends on their lifestyle and where they spend time regularly. That is a conversation worth having with your veterinarian.

If you are concerned your dog may have been exposed, call (604) 980-2222.

Black bears are active again on the North Shore and May is when they start moving into residential areas as they emerge from hibernation and search for food.

North Vancouver and West Vancouver have well-documented bear activity along trail edges, in residential green spaces, and near compost and fruit trees. A dog encounter with a bear is serious at any size.

If you think your dog may have encountered a bear or ingested slug bait, call us immediately. (604) 980-2222.
