I’ve been teaching people this for years, never ever pull the dogs apart! Grab the collar and pull straight up, twist the collar if you have too, when the dog can’t breathe they will let go immediately, then you can pull the dog away and get it to somewhere safe. It won’t hurt the dog, they’ll let go before their throat could get injured, and honestly a bruised trachea is a much better outcome than what could happen if the dogs aren’t separated right away. I used to have 2 large dogs 50lbs and 70lbs, one was food reactive so occasionally she would go after my other dog, I had to separate them myself, I was 105lbs at the time but by lifting them both by the collars I was always able to get them apart in less than a minute.
