Would the Canucks ever go out on game day without a strategy or plays and drills that they’ve practiced over and over?

Would a marathoner show up on race day without ever having run a single kilometre?

No. That would be setting themselves up to fail, right?

So why would we only practice our reactivity protocols when another dog is right in front of us barking at our dog, or wait to practice our dog’s recall until they’re running full-speed-ahead at some distraction?!

Well now that I put it that way, that would be setting ourselves and our dogs up to fail, right…?

PRACTICE what you learn with your trainer when there are no distractions, no other dogs around, no “big moments” to overcome. So that when those moments arrive, you know EXACTLY what to do and you are READY and CONFIDENT to face that stuff head on!

Meet these 2 mischief makers, Charley (black) and Daisy (yellow).

These girls, while sweet were a little bit unruly and their mom really needed help with not jumping up when company came (Charley), not pulling on the leash to sniff everything (Daisy), impulse control around feeding time and leaving the house (both), recall around water and in general (both but mostly Charley), and barking for mom to throw her ball (Charley).

We have put together before and after videos wherever we could for you guys to see the progress along the way.

Enjoy!!

Thank you so much Kelsey, you and Simba did amazing ! 🥳

Lack of follow-through is probably the biggest cracks in the relationship foundation that we see daily.

Dogs test us all the time, it’s their job. And they do it so that they can feel safe, knowing that the same rules apply. Always.

Every time we let our dogs get away with not doing something that we’ve asked of them, they slip less and less into “follow mode”.

When a dog feels safe and secure based on rules that always apply, they will follow us to the ends of the earth.

Hence “man’s best friend”.

Prong collars. There, I said it.

They have become so stigmatized and polarizing in the dog training world because of one thing… a lack of education and understanding.

A common misconception about this amazing tool is that the reason it works is because it hurts the dog whenever it pulls on the prong collar.

When in reality, this is not at all how they work! At least not when fitted, introduced, and used properly.

Every dog has (to some extent) something called an “oppositional reflex” - this is a fancy way of saying that when a dog feels a steady band of pressure pull back on them (a harness or flat buckle collar), their brain automatically sends their body the message to pull against it! Hence we get caught in this frustrating game of tug-of-war with our dog.

The reason the prong collar works so well (besides having the fingers or “prongs” that hold it up and off of the airway of the dog so that they can’t choke) is because you now have that pressure distributed amongst that series of fingers. Voilà! Oppositional reflex bypassed and you now have a dog that doesn’t pull!

But wait…does this mean we will have to use the prong collar forever? Maybe, but if your dog can use it to learn that a loose leash is what you want, then eventually a simple slip lead will do just fine!

Too many times we hear people making excuses for their dog’s bad behaviour. And guess what the number one reason is?

That’s right! “He’s a rescue!”

What does this mean exactly? We are giving our dogs more leniency because we don’t completely know their history?

We are excusing them jumping up on people, not coming back when called, rushing other dogs and other rude behaviour because we feel sorry for them?

What is this all about?

It’s an excuse for bad behaviour and that is all.

Rescue dogs that are brought into our homes, more than other dogs arguably, need more structure, more rules and more boundaries than dogs we got as puppies because in order to know where they fit in in this new and strange environment need leadership first and affection last.

Stop making excuses, start demanding their best by laying down rules that apply ALL the time, and start training!

Have you been battling trying the same things over and over again with your dog and not seeing the results that you want?

Isn’t that close to the definition of insanity “trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results?”

That’s probably why you feel lost.

If you’re considering ecollar training, or a balanced approach to finally get over that plateau with your dog, do your research!!! We are all quite different in how we train. Find someone you are comfortable with.

If you want to keep food training, that’s fine too! Just call around and find someone who is willing to tweak things a bit so that you’re not chasing your tail once again 🥵

First stop… place command! For impulse control, listening, improving the relationship he has with Kelsey, teaching Kelsey follow-through, and teaching Simba how to just “turn off”.

Oh man, where to even start with what Kelsey was going through with Simba?!

Counter surfing, pulling on the leash, lunging at other dogs on the walk out of excitement, not coming when called offleash, whining and crying in his crate, guarding his food and bones to the point of snapping at Kelsey, not being able to tie him up anywhere and run in to grab a coffee etc without Simba making a HUGE scene… and the list goes on!

Well, you see that grad bandana and a smile on Kelsey’s face so I guess that means he’s a pretty darn good dog now!
