"A fine drink deserves a fine cherry," boasted Paw Paw before ceremoniously dropping one of his own into his daily Old Fashioned.
We couldn't agree more, which is why we built Paw Paw's Cocktail Cherries, a company dedicated to ensuring that every premium cocktail is elevated with premium ingredients.
Paw Paw's Cocktail Cherries starts with what else? A story and a cherry.
Paw Paw was born and raised a country gentleman in Southern Louisiana, son of a sheriff's deputy in East Baton Rouge Parish. There were plenty of prohibition era cocktail recipes to enjoy, but gentlemen then preferred and drank straight bourbon whiskey. And Paw Paw - as much as the Great Depression could afford - was raised a Louisiana gentleman.
Cherries were a rare and premium fruit back then, especially in the South. They were even rarer aboard a Navy Destroyer ship crisscrossing the Pacific Ocean, where Paw Paw served during World War II. When he got back from the War, he was shaken, but not stirred from his love of a fine cocktail served on a porch swing and with a tender conversation. He had seen first hand that "there ain't no pockets in them [funeral] shrouds," and resolved to live, eat and drink fully until his time came. That meant that even the little things mattered, like how you made and what you put in your drink.
An Old Fashioned aficionado, every time Paw Paw got his hands on a group of cherries, he'd treat them like the crimson gold they were, and use every essence of the fruit to ensure they were "steeped in the finest cherry syrup imaginable." His Louisiana heritage syrups were delicious. And soon, family and neighbors would be replacing brown sugar cubes in their Old Fashioneds with Paw Paw's cocktail cherry syrup, a tradition that sadly scattered as Paw Paw and Maw Maw aged and then passed many years ago.
It wasn't until a chance summer trip to the orchards of Okanagan, British Columbia in 2015 did Paw Paw's grandson begin to resurrect Paw Paw's cocktail cherry recipe. Supported by the family, and bolstered by the explosive growth of craft spirits and beer, Paw Paw's Cocktail Cherries was born - in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
For our first batch of Paw Paw's Cocktail Cherries, we used a lovely, organic, hand-picked and pitted, red, sweet, late harvest, Van cherry from Sundance Farms, British Columbia.
Over 10,000 cherries from Sundance were delicately prepared with the stems intact and the cherry left unbruised. Fresh organic cherry juice simmered with cane molasses make the syrup for Paw Paw's "Original" Cocktail Cherry flavor. In addition, there's the Boulevardier, with an aromatic orange press flavor, and the Amaretto, cooked with roasted almond - perfect for Manhattans. All three syrups preserve their cherry shine and taste delicious. We hope you'll enjoy them with your fine drink, just as much as he did.
Life is short and precious. Take the time to enjoy the little things and if you're going to do something, do and enjoy it right. "There ain't no pockets in them shrouds!"
