Case Spotlight: Panleukopenia: The Scariest Word in a Cat Rescue.
Meet Hailey (Tortie), Harley (Tabby), and Hunter (Orange), 3 rescue kittens from Niagara Falls Community Cats.
At just 4 weeks old, all three tested positive for Feline Panleukopenia on a Parvo SNAP test. They were immediately placed into strict quarantine at our clinic and underwent intensive treatment for a total of 5 days, as we fought to save their lives.
Against the odds, all three kittens survived.
Unfortunately, as a result of Panleukopenia, Hunter and Harley developed Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH). CH is a neurological condition caused by damage to the cerebellum while a kitten is still developing, which is most commonly from Panleukopenia exposure in utero or at a very young age. It affects a cat’s coordination and balance, causing a wobbly gait or tremors. The good news is CH is not painful, not contagious, and does not affect intelligence or life expectancy. Cats with CH can live full, happy lives with just a little extra love and understanding.
Despite everything they’ve been through, Hailey, Harley, and Hunter have all now been adopted into loving homes. Their story is a powerful reminder of the importance of rescue, vaccination, and never giving up on the most fragile patients.
We are so proud of these little warriors and grateful to everyone who played a part in their rescue and recovery.❤️🐾
