🌫️ Smoke in the air doesn’t just affect us. It affects our pets too. 🐶🐱

With air quality alerts across Ontario, it’s important to keep an eye out for the early signs of smoke inhalation, including:
🐾 Coughing
🐾 Gagging
🐾 Red or watery eyes
🐾 Difficulty breathing
🐾 Fatigue
🐾 Decreased appetite

Pets with heart or lung conditions, seniors, puppies and kittens, and flat-faced breeds are at even greater risk.

Here’s how you can help keep them safe:
💙 Keep walks and outdoor time short
💙 Avoid strenuous exercise outside
💙 Keep windows and doors closed when possible
💙 Make sure fresh, clean water is always available
💙 Keep them entertained indoors with enrichment like puzzle toys, snuffle mats, chews, and training games

If your pet develops severe breathing difficulty, collapses, or seems distressed, contact your veterinarian immediately.

One of the easiest ways to add a little more variety to your pet’s diet? Rotate proteins. 🥩🦃🦆🐑

Just like we wouldn’t want to eat the exact same meal every day, offering different proteins can help provide a wider range of naturally occurring nutrients and keep mealtime interesting.

A simple goal? Try rotating between 3–5 different proteins over time. It doesn’t have to happen overnight, and it doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with one new protein, see how your pet does, and slowly build from there.

Every pet is different, so if your dog or cat has known food sensitivities or you’re unsure where to start, we’re always happy to help you choose a rotation that makes sense for them.

For a lot of us, feeding kibble was never really a “decision.”

It was simply what we knew.

Growing up, our family pets ate kibble because that’s what everyone did. We went to the pet store, grabbed a bag off the shelf, filled the bowl, and never thought twice about it. We genuinely didn’t know there was another option.

Then one day, we got curious.

We started asking questions. Reading labels. Learning about ingredients. Exploring what else was available for our own dog.

That curiosity eventually led us to raw feeding, and it completely changed the way we think about pet nutrition.

But here’s the thing: we don’t want to shame people for what they feed.

Every pet parent who walks through our doors loves their pet and wants to do the best they can with the knowledge, budget, comfort level, and circumstances they have.

And we also know that feeding 100% raw isn’t realistic for everyone.

That’s why one of the things we say most often in our store is:

✨ Some raw is better than no raw. ✨

Adding even a small amount of fresh food to a bowl can be a meaningful step. Maybe that’s a raw dinner a few times a week. Maybe it’s a spoonful mixed into kibble. Maybe it’s using raw when your budget allows and a quality kibble the rest of the time.

Think about our own diets. Adding a side salad to dinner is still beneficial, even if the rest of the meal isn’t perfect. Small improvements still matter.

We are grateful for every conversation we get to have about nutrition, every customer who asks a question, and every dog who gets a little more fresh food in their bowl than they did yesterday.

Because progress doesn’t have to be all or nothing. 💙

💙 A Personal Note From Us 💙

After a lot of thought and many conversations around our kitchen table, we’ve made the decision to begin looking for a new owner for our ADR Pet Stores Newmarket location.

This is not a closing. It’s simply the next chapter in a journey that has meant so much to our family.

What many people don’t know is that ADR Newmarket started with a single freezer in our garage in Keswick and a vehicle full of deliveries. We spent countless evenings packing orders, making deliveries, answering questions, and dreaming about what ADR Newmarket could become. Before long, that dream outgrew the garage and Newmarket became the very first ADR store our family opened.

Over the years, this store has been so much more than a business. It’s where we’ve grown as people, as business owners, and as a family. Our kids have grown up alongside this community, and one of our favourite things is hearing customers say, “I can’t believe how much they’ve grown!”

We’re incredibly proud of what has been built here - the relationships, the education, the healthier pets, and the amazing community that surrounds it.

As owners of multiple locations, we’ve realized we can’t be in three places at once. We want every store and every community to receive the time, focus, and energy it deserves. Because of that, we’re looking for the right person to carry Newmarket forward - someone who shares our passion for pets, natural nutrition, and exceptional customer care.

To everyone who has supported us along the way: thank you. Your trust, friendship, and loyalty have meant more than words can say.
