Edible Oasis is a small backyard, urban nursery and farm located in New Westminster, BC. We provide plants and advice to help create natural, sustainable, edible garden spaces. Inspired by the ethnically diverse and bountiful food gardens lining the alleys of East Vancouver from my youth, the concept of Edible Oasis came about as I slowly transformed my entire urban lot from a simple grass yard in

to a landscape of edible and native plants, that is both beautiful and edible – it can be harvested and foraged from throughout the year. Check out some of the great plants we grow:

Annual Mother's Day Weekend Sale - yes it is still on. It sure has been a hectic few weeks - lots of our local honey this year 🐝 Hope to see you here!

What an amazing day yesterday. After returning from a walk with Willow I sat by the hives and one seemed to be extremely busy. I opened the entrance to let the traffic flow and the swarm was just starting - the bees poured out of the hive and peppered the sky. They bounced off me in their rush to get out - they weren't aggressive at all but the volume was surprising. They flew over the house and luckily settled on the grape arbour in the front yard. I was able to easily acess them from a step ladder. I put a nuc box under the swarm and lighly put a few handfuls of bees in the nuc - I obviously had the queen and the rest of the bees quickly started to fill the box. If you watch the videos you see them rushing in. There were lots on the ground also so I put the box on the ground later and more bees rushed in. Had them caught and rehomed within an hour. Very lucky to have caught them and get such a first hand experience watching the swarm from escape to capture! 🐝

Returned from a nice walk yesterday and was excited to see the bees were incredibly busy. It was the first really warm day of the year and they were busy on cleansing flights and even collecting some pollen. Overwintering is challanging so it is always a great feeling of accomplishment seeing them doing well at this time of year! 🐝

It is hard to believe we are already over a week into 2025! While we collect a great deal of our own seed, certain species like peppers and squash can't be collected easily because of cross pollination. This year I found a new seed supplier which had some peppers I wasn't able to get over the last few years and ended picking up a bunch of seeds and some great new varieties such as Cayenne Purple hot pepper, Great White Tomato and Red Pear Cherry Tomato. Looking forward to trying these and other new varieties. 🐝

It is the beginning of fall and lots still to harvest and preserve in the garden. It was a hard growing season - some things like our tomatoes matured almost a month later than usual. 🐝🐔

Great to have some cooler weather and rain these last few days. Filled up 3 of our 55 gallon rain barrels and would have filled another if i had remembered to turn the drain faucet off!

Canadian Indigenous Flag designed by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Mulidzas -Curtis Wilson.

Mulidzas is the traditional name handed to Curtis Wilson during a family Potlatch held in 2001. Curtis was born, raised and lived in Campbell River. His family comes from the four corners of the Kwakwaka’wakw territory. Curtis’s paternal grandparents come from Axwamees (Wakeman Sound), and Wei Wai Kai (Cape Mudge); maternal grandparents come from Ba’as (Blunden Harbour), and Wei Wai K*m (Campbell River).

Curtis pushed the envelope and expanded his artistic abilities. He primarily operated privately and had a number of experiences he attributes to his expansions. He worked within the schools offering art classes and working on projects. In 2017 he was invited to be involved in an Art Show which was hosted in the Nanaimo Art Gallery.

He started to carve at small a shed built by his grandfather Sam Henderson Sr., under the instruction of many of his uncles and cousins. Curtis utilized many of the techniques and styles from each and every one of his uncles and cousins. In learning the old styles of his grandfather Sam Henderson Sr., and the new styles of his uncles and cousins, Curtis developed a unique style of his own.

Curtis tragically passed away at the age of 39 leaving behind a young family and a thriving body of work including the Canadian Indigenous Flag.

HAPPY WORLD BEE DAY - the bees were enjoying a refreshing drink from one of the water dishes we put out for them. Last Thursday night I was lucky enough to catch a swarm off a goal post at an elementary school in Langley thanks to Cindy, a retired coworker who alerted me to it. Happy to say the swarm and nuc I got on Mother's Day both seem to be doing well! 🐝

Thanks to everyone who made it out to our annual Mother's Day weekend sale. We had beautiful weather - it was great to chat with so many people. I spent last night planting some peppers, tomatoes and basil in part of the large greenhouse. Still lots to get planted! Winston and Ninna of dropped off my nuc on Sunday when picking up some plants. I appreciate them saving me the trip. The 🐝 are loving there new home.
