Stay! This one can be tough for dogs, especially adolescent pups like these who want to be a part of the action at your side - and then once distractions come into play it's a whole other ballgame.

Want to know the #1 thing you can do to level up and lock in those stationary skills?

*Return to Reward*

Instead of calling your dog to you after a stay, go back to them and reward/release from there. Help them learn that "stay" means "until I get back" 90+% of the time, so they're less likely to seek those little indications that maybe it's go time. You can see Birdie, Catriana, and Tucker really locking this one in here - these are NOT dogs that turn down a party, but they're figuring out that if you can develop a taste for broccoli the cake arrives faster.

My dog can hold a stay while I drop food, do a silly dance, break into a sprint... As well as when dogs, cars, and livestock are running around her. It's a safety skill, but training it can also be fun!

Not all dogs appreciate the company of other dogs, and that is perfectly normal - like us, dogs have a wide range of sociability and preferences. For the dogs that DO like to party, group dog walks/hikes are a great opportunity to flex those social muscles and we are lucky to have a number of dog walkers (both on and off leash) here in Nelson that can take your dog on epic adventures.

But what about the social dogs that WANT to party but don't have the skills? Maybe they come in too hot, or can't handle when others do, or their recalls or listening amid distractions are so-so? It isn't fair to your dog, your dog walker, OR the other dogs in the group to expect them to figure it out on the fly.

That's where a professional can help. With my squad of canine assistants (all graduated training clients) as backup, I teach dogs the skills to reliably participate in leashed or offleash groups so that they can join in smoothly and successfully. Using a step-by-step graduating plan can give your dog confidence in what to do, and give you confidence in them!

Think your friendly dog would love to join a group walk setting but worried they can't handle it? Shoot me a message and let's get them ready!

Here's your gently pointed reminder that dogs showing and even using their teeth is not necessarily indicative of any intent to do harm with them and certainly need not be labeled "aggressive". Dogs' teeth are their hands as well as a component of communication. My Aussie loves playing bitey-face with puppies and if I engage her this way, using my hand, she's just as aware of contact and pressure. This allows little Lou the opportunity to practice safe and appropriate mouth usage, and is an important skill as puppies grow bigger and stronger.

Willow 🩷

This gal and I go way back. We have been working together for *years* and she has come SUCH a long way! Found as an adolescent tied up and left outside a vet school, she relocated to a loving home that quickly discovered just how not-ok she is (and likely always had been) with other dogs. She was also incredibly strong and fast and determined, and while she liked people she didn't particularly think they had any information for her.

Behaviour change is a process, and different for every being (dog, human or other). I've had dogs overcome aggressive behaviour in an hour, a week, in a class series... Some never do, for various reasons, and some take time, like Willow. We don't know how dog-social she will get but she has a great life with her people, their people, and respects the cat at home. We don't want to suppress her into false calm, we want to show her she's safe and can stand down.

With so few people that can physically handle Willow, first step was leash skills and attention... She has gone from 2 leashes and a halti to one leash on a harness and walks like a dream most days. Thanks to the safety net of her adorable custom muzz from we were able to start working on seeing dogs from a great distance (she was willing to close the gap hard and fast if we'd let her) and now she can keep her cool as long as they don't come at her.

Another huge part of Willow's progress has been hikes in the woods - on a long line and muzzled for safety, she has been able to explore, decompress, and build confidence that contributes to her improved mental state. Her social limitations could have made her world smaller but we didn't let that happen, and she has gone from a dog that hard stares any canine on the horizon to one that sniffs everything on walks to gain information. This may sound like nbd but it isn't - Willow needed a lot of decompressing to be able to take her tension down voluntarily. Forcing her wouldn't have led to lasting results we can trust.

You can't bust your butt all day every day. Getting breaks makes us better learners, so let yourself enjoy life with your dog ESPECIALLY if other parts are tough.

ADOPTABLE DOG:
I don't usually post dogs for rehoming on this page, but there are exceptions and Mikko is one. He's a special guy that did private training and group classes with me (he's amazing). If his human's life circumstances hadn't changed so dramatically (specifically an upcoming move to the busy city) she'd keep him forever like she planned - but Mikko is not a city guy, so she's doing a hard thing for the sake of his quality of life.

Please share and help Mikko find his perfect home. If anyone is interested they can contact me and I'll put them in touch.

From his person:

Mikko is a 2-year-old, high-energy, intelligent, playful, and sassy dog with a big personality. He is also a very sensitive dog with big feelings. Once Mikko has time to warm up to someone, he becomes very people-oriented and forms strong bonds, preferring to be close, included, and involved in daily life. He thrives with structure, routine, and shared activities such as walks, training, play, and outdoor time with his person.

Mikko is a loyal, affectionate, and expressive companion who loves cuddles, playing fetch, and being part of everything his person is doing. He especially loves hiking, training, off-leash adventures in the forest, car rides, and spending time in the snow. He loves to partake in weekly group dog walks with Kootenay Canines and doggy daycare at Gracie's Kennels. He does best when included in everyday life rather than left to entertain himself.

Mikko has been trained using positive reinforcement methods and has participated in nosework classes. He enjoys learning new tricks and commands and knows sit, stay, wait, down, mat, off, come, heel, look (check-ins), touch, up, and sit pretty.

Mikko has lived successfully and lovingly with a cat and enjoys having an animal companion. He engages in appropriate play such as chasing, wrestling, grooming, and resting together, and would do well in a home with a feline companion.

With other dogs, Mikko’s behaviour is context-dependent. He has enjoyed social interaction in off-leash group walks and doggy daycare, and loves participating in these activities weekly. He requires slow, structured introductions to new dogs, and not all introductions are successful. He can come on strong and be overexcited or protective at first, but does well with parallel walking, neutral meeting spaces, and time to observe before engaging. He seems less protective and more relaxed with smaller dogs and puppies and is continuing to work on calm, polite greetings with other dogs in the community.

On leash, Mikko can be reactive around unfamiliar dogs, particularly when close to his handler, and may bark or lunge if introductions are rushed or if he feels protective. This behaviour became more noticeable after an on-leash dog attack at approximately 9 months old. With distance, redirection, and consistent training, he can often settle quickly and has made tremendous progress.

With visitors and new people, Mikko will bark and may rush toward the door when someone arrives. He does best with calm, structured introductions and benefits from being directed to his β€œmat,” where he can settle with guidance and food reinforcement. He may take some time to fully relax, particularly with men or unfamiliar visitors, as he can be cautious or unsure at first. Once comfortable, he is affectionate and playful.

Mikko previously experienced separation anxiety. With routine, consistency, and support, he has made significant improvements and can now be left alone during the workday in a familiar environment. During transitions or in new environments, he may need patience and gradual alone-time as he adjusts. He currently takes a daily medication that has been helpful in supporting this progress.

Mikko is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

Mikko would be best suited to an experienced, active adopter who understands sensitive dogs, has patience for his big feelings, and is comfortable continuing training while providing structure, consistency, reassurance, and inclusion.

Max πŸ’› This sweet 1-1/2 year old boy was adopted in November by a previous client of mine, and it has been such a joy to reconnect with them and help Max settle into his new home. He was advertised as a boxer/corgi mix - we see no signs of corgi but he is DEFINITELY a boxer - goofy, playful, sensitive, and spring-loaded! His first home was a big property where he ran around joyfully a lot but didn't experience "the world" - so moving into town, even a town as small as Nelson, was a big adjustment! Max was extremely timid and worried about all the action, and his family knew to take the time (and employ the pros) to build his confidence the right way.

Max has come leaps and bounds, making canine and human friends and starting to believe that all the sights and sounds around him are indeed normal and safe. He's learned about leashes and recalls, and continues to settle in and let his personality shine through. If you see this guy around town don't be offended if he wants to pass by without greeting - being comfortable being touched by strangers is a learned skill and, frankly, I don't care for it either! Best practice is always to admire the cute dog respectfully - look, don't touch, unless invited by the owner :)

Nell, Ranger and Patina are extremely cute and are all on their way to becoming Polite Puppies in group class! I love classes with variety like this. I run group classes only a few times a year, and I adjust the curriculum each session to the dogs in the group (with some constants for all pups of course) so individual needs are met and their one-of-a-kind personalities can thrive πŸΎπŸ’•
