Victor, the 10 week old Yorkie Shih Tzu X, had his first grooming appointment today. 💙 It was a lot to get used to because all of it was new for him, but he was a brave pup! He had a power-nap afterwards while he was waiting for his mom.

“When should I book my next appointment?”

• Nails = every 4 weeks.
3 weeks if you’re trying to chase back the quicks (the vein inside the nail), 5 or 6 weeks if your dog wears down their nails on pavement or sandstone.

• Baths = 4-6 weeks.
4 weeks if they’re shedding regularly or if their active lifestyle means they’re at the beach or in the mud. 6 weeks is great otherwise, for most dogs.

• Haircuts = 6-8 weeks.
6 weeks if your dog sports a longer length (like a drop-coat Yorkie, or something over 5/8” all over) and/or thicker curly coated dogs. You may be able to do 9-10 weeks if you like doing short shaves on your dog and/or brush regularly at home. 8 weeks is general perfect timeframe though.

Has it been about 6 weeks but you’re not quite ready in a couple weeks for another full haircut? A bath & trim is perfect! For that I leave the overall length on the body, but trim up around the face and feet, tidy up the paw pads and sanitary areas, make sure your dog is tangle-free, and trim off the odd little tufts of hair that stick out funny. And then you’re probably good to go for another month or so!
