Listening to your dog will solve more problems than correcting them.

One of my very first goals with any client is helping them truly understand their dog’s behaviour — not just stop it.

Because behaviour doesn’t come out of nowhere.
It’s driven by emotions, needs, desires, past learning, and the environment around them.

If you’re only focused on fixing a behaviour without asking why it’s happening, you’ll be chasing your own tail.

Take something simple like a dog pawing at you for attention.
You might decide that’s not an appropriate way to ask — and that’s okay.
But before we shut it down, we need to ask:

• Are their needs being met?
• Are they mentally and physically fulfilled?
• Are they bored or overstimulated?
• Have we accidentally reinforced this behaviour before?

When we punish a dog for communicating, we aren’t teaching them what to do — we’re just telling them they’re wrong for expressing themselves. And that’s unfair.

When we slow down, listen, and understand our dogs, our responses become calmer, kinder, and far more effective.

Understanding always comes before training 💛

Now that all the “New Year, new me” posts are done, let’s talk about realistic, healthy goals you can set for your dog 🐾

✨ Worry less about a dirty dog
Baths exist. A muddy dog usually means they had a great day being a dog—and that’s a win.

✨ Use a long leash more often (when safe to do so)
More freedom to sniff and explore builds confidence and fulfillment. Bonus: you can practice loose-leash skills.

✨ Learn more about canine body language
You are your dog’s biggest advocate. Once you learn how they communicate, you’ll be amazed by how much they’re telling you.

✨ Try a new activity together
Scent work, agility, retrieving, biking… you might find something you both love. Or maybe a visit to Mindful Mutts? 👀

✨ Let your dog dig more
Love to dig? Hate a destroyed yard? Create a designated digging spot—sandbox or garden area works great.

✨ Work on fears and phobias
Thunderstorms, fireworks, dog reactivity… let 2026 be the year your dog gains confidence and lives a happier, calmer life.

No matter the goal, AYM Dog Training is here to help.
My goal is simple: to help owners give their dogs the best life possible 🤍🐕

🚨UPDATE ‼️
BIRDIE is HOME SAFE ❤️

⚠️UPDATE - STILL NOT FOUND ⚠️
Please check your sheds and under porches if you live in this area.

⚠️LOST DOG ⚠️
*Please note that Birdie is 🚫 not a Cottage Paws Rescue 🐾 dog 🐕 but we are involved in her search.
We are working with Kellie Revell who is well trained in finding lost animals and we are doing everything we can.

🚨LAKE MANITOWABING/MCKELLAR/HURDVILLE/WAUBAMIK area - at this point she could be in any of these areas
Originally escaped from her home 🏡 on Maplewood Drive.
*Please no negative comments - owners have a secure fenced in area for Birdie but she got out the front door and took off.
Accidents happen and we are here to try and find her and get her back home to her people who have not stopped looking for her since she disappeared yesterday.

She loves people but she will be in fight/flight/freeze mode at this point so it's very important that you don't try and catch her but instead report her to the # below on the flyer ASAP.
She is wearing a collar with tags on it.

🚨Please SHARE 🚨
and if you live in this area please check your sheds and under your decks and keep an eye out for Miss Birdie.

****Also does anyone in this area have a drone that could be used in the search ?

Everyone knows Darla… but the dog who truly started it all was Mya. 🤍

I got Mya when I was 9 years old, and she quickly became my whole heart. She was the first dog who taught me what it meant to love an animal so deeply that it changes the entire direction of your life.

Because of her, I chose a career as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
Because of her, I fell in love with animal behaviour, communication, and fear-free handling.
Because of her, I discovered a passion for helping animals feel safe, understood, and supported.

Everything I do today traces back to that little dog.

I know I wouldn’t be where I am — as an owner, a trainer, an RVT, or a person — without her. And I’ll spend the rest of my life and career honouring her by helping animals and the people who love them.

And if you didn’t know… AYM is Mya spelled backwards.
It only felt right to name this business after the dog who started it all. 🐾✨

Here’s to Mya — the inspiration behind everything.

Progress in a reactive dog **doesn’t always look like you think it will** — and it definitely doesn’t look the same for every dog. 🖤

Reactivity is a journey, not a quick fix. Counter-conditioning takes time, repetition, and consistency. You shouldn’t expect immediate results… and no ethical trainer should promise them.

Signs of progress might be subtle at first:
✨ Shorter recovery times
✨ Taking food around triggers
✨ Checking in with you
✨ Reduced intensity
✨ Staying under threshold a *little* longer
✨ One good rep in a sea of messy ones

Your dog’s timeline is *their* timeline. Someone else’s progress has nothing to do with yours — or your dog’s capabilities. 🐾

Celebrate the small wins. They add up to big change. 💛

A lot of dogs struggle to settle, stay regulated, or listen well during training… and one sneaky cause is something most owners don’t even realize they’re doing:

✨ Talking to their dog *too much*.

Dogs are constantly taking in information from their environment—especially from *us*. When we fill their day with nonstop talking, narrating, or random sounds directed at them, it creates a steady stream of verbal noise they feel responsible for monitoring.
Over time, this can lead to **hyperarousal**, difficulty relaxing, and a dog who seems “on” all the time, they're waiting for the next thing to happen!

The same thing happens during training.
When we add extra words, repeat cues, or talk *around* the cue (“Fluffy… hey… look here… okay sit, sit, sit!”), the actual cue becomes unclear. Your dog learns to tune it out, or gets frustrated trying to guess which part you want them to respond to.

Here’s what helps:
• Keep daily chatter low so your dog isn’t constantly on alert.
• During training, stick to simple, consistent cues said *once*.
• Save your verbal praise for when it matters—it makes it more meaningful!

Small changes here can hugely improve your dog’s ability to settle, listen, and learn. If you’ve been feeling like your dog is “always wound up” or “ignoring cues,” this is a great place to start.
