Agriculture in the Classroom is a industry-supported initiative designed to work in partnership with Newfoundland & Labrador (NL) educators. Agriculture in the Classroom is intended to help NL children increase their awareness and understanding of why our food system is essential in society. We participate in many events throughout the year such as Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month, Rooting for

Health, Amazing Agriculture Adventure and Trade Shows. AITC-NL's Little Green Thumbs (LGT) and Little Green Sprouts (LGS) programs are in 112 schools across Newfoundland and expands every year. The Little Green Thumbs program aims to help young people value the health of themselves, the environment and their community through active participation in a classroom garden. The grow kits, soil and seeds form an indoor garden that complement learning concepts such as where food comes from, how to grow healthy plants, sustainable food systems, community interdependence and nutrition in fun, interesting and relevant ways.

At Agriculture in the Classroom NL, we believe change starts with educating our youth.

Today, we celebrate not only the beauty and power of nature but the incredible energy of young people who are learning to care for it. Through hands-on gardening and agriculture education, we’re growing more than plants—we're growing future stewards of the Earth.

This year’s theme reminds us that restoring our planet starts with action. Whether it's planting a seed, composting, or understanding the ecosystems in our own backyards, every step counts.

Let’s keep empowering youth to dig in, learn deeply, and grow green. Together, we’re cultivating a healthier, more sustainable world—one garden at a time.

Students at MacDonald Junior High got to see how research scientists create thousands of identical plants! Darryl Martin, a Molecular Biology Technician with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada showed students how they replicate plants to ensure farmers are getting healthy, viable, and hardy plants for Newfoundland and Labrador consumers. Thank you, Darryl, for joining us and thank you to MacDonald JH for inviting us into your science classes. 🍓🫐

From Farm to Fridge – and Every Proud Hand in Between! 💙🐄

Today, we’re raising a glass (of milk, of course) to World Milk Day — and to the hardworking people across Newfoundland and Labrador who make it all possible.

From our 19 dedicated dairy farmers who care for their herds through rain, shine, or snow.

To the skilled team at the NL Dairy Co-operative who process, package, and deliver every carton with care. And to you, our community, who choose local every time you pour a glass.

Whether it’s 2%, skim, or creamy 3.25%, your favourite Central Dairies milk is 100% local, made right here on the island.

Today, we celebrate milk — and the community that makes it possible.

Today is International Day of Potato! Whether you mash it, roast it, boil it, or French fry it, potatoes are a staple food here in NL!
🥔DYK? Potatoes have more potassium than bananas!

🥔Why shouldn't you tell a secret of a farm?
The potatoes have eyes and the corn has ears! 😂

🥔Photo: Ms. Maureen's garden produced this double potato!

What's your favorite way to eat potatoes?

NLSchools Schools are eligible to apply for the Community Garden Support Program with our friends at Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture NL.
As part of the annual Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program, the Provincial Government is investing nearly $133,000 into non-repayable grants to help increase food self-sufficiency, access to fresh foods, and consumption of locally produced fruits and vegetables. With thousands of participants tending their gardens together, the program also raises awareness of the importance of local food production and the agriculture sector.

The program will provide up to a maximum of $750 per eligible applicant in the form of a non-repayable grant. Funding is limited to one grant per garden location.
Don't miss out on this opportunity!
