Wolf teeth can be found in various shapes and sizes. To ensure the comfort and well-being of young horses, it is vital to remove these teeth before introducing a bit. Failure to do so may result in discomfort and potential complications, including tooth fractures, which can make removal more complicated.

Recently, I have come across several instances of wolf teeth in older equines that had undergone dental treatments within the past year or two. These horses experienced difficulties with the bit and sensitivities to it. The removal of the wolf teeth yielded improved comfort and rideability for these horses.

Yesterday was “get your horses teeth checked day”. If you don’t think this is important, you shouldn’t own a horse. It’s as simple as that….
Springtime dental’s are done on my young horses checking to make sure caps are coming off and permanent teeth are coming in straight, old horses that need twice yearly maintenance and especially mares before breeding.
True story- I have one young filly that is turning five. She has had 5 dental procedures since the age of 3. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t be alive as her mouth has been a horse owners nightmare. She possessed caps from hell that weren’t coming off on their own. I was hoping that last falls dental work was the fix but nope.. she had a nasty cap that wasn’t coming off and rooted tight putting her permanent teeth at risk coming in.

The senior horses are no different than us as we age. Age will take its toll on teeth and it’s hard enough getting old so make it a little easier on these old souls and give them the comfort they deserve. And most importantly find yourself a good Equine dentist. We have some great ones here in Saskatchewan and April Berukoff and Leo Tournier are among the best.
