THIS little girl. My brave little toaster. My tough cookie. My miracle girl. Over 15 years old, and today she survived a lengthy dental surgery that we were all quite nervous about - and not only did she survive it, she was amazing!!! I mean, it helps that our vet is absolutely epic, but this girl just has some bit of magic in her!!
A couple of months ago during a routine check up, we found out two things - her teeth really had reached the point of no return, AND her liver numbers were absolutely trash. So, we kicked up the meds that make her liver better but her body not so great (which is why we don’t just kick up the meds permanently - she loses too much weight), and last week her check up revealed that her numbers were significantly improved. The concern for surgery was weather her liver could tolerate the anesthesia, particularly for a long surgery. But, we had also reached a point where her mouth was becoming really sore, so with these good numbers, we had to take the chance and do the surgery, or else we’d be considering her quality of life and whether we’d have to say goodbye to her, because we are just not willing to let her carry on in pain all the time. She had a total of 9 teeth extracted, and it was a long surgery, but she did really well throughout surgery (that’s Yay #1) and she has recovered from anesthesia like a champ (that’s Yay #2), and so far it doesn’t look like her liver is doing to hang on to that anesthesia cocktail for very long!! She’s bright and alert this evening, eager to eat in small amounts, and I really could not ask for a better outcome to a situation that we’ve been worried about for a few months now.
I am so pleased she is now going to be pain free again, and also has much better breath already!!
These are the decisions that need to be navigated in senior care, and it’s not easy. Thankfully, we have lots of experience, the financial ability, an incredible vet that we trust implicitly, and a superhero of a dog who can bounce back from anything!!!
