Welcome to Bruce! ✈️

This weekend we were able to bring Bruce south, the brother to Poppy, Zara, and Meesha, who made the journey the weekend before.

Bruce is from Attawapiskat, where there is no veterinary care and the only way in or out is by plane. Those flights are essential, but they’re also one of the biggest expenses in rescuing northern dogs.

A huge THANK YOU to Flights For Hope for generously sponsoring Bruce’s flight from Attawapiskat to Timmins. Because of their support, Bruce got the first leg of his journey to a safer future.

We’d also like to thank his amazing foster in Timmins for caring for him for a few days, and the three volunteer drivers who completed the transport to Southern Ontario. And of course his southern foster, who is the whole reason we could even say yes.

It truly takes a village. Thank you to everyone who helps make these rescues possible. ❤️

💙 Blu here! 💙 I’ve been busy enjoying these beautiful summer days while they last, soaking up the sunshine and making the most of every moment before autumn arrives! ☀️🍂

And speaking of making the most of our time, I wanted to take a moment to share a little reminder about the adoption process. We get a LOT of messages and questions every day about the dogs in our care, and we know everyone is excited to find their perfect match. ❤️

📖 Please read the entire adoption bio.
We put important information in each dog’s bio, and most of the questions we receive can be answered simply by reading it in full. We promise, the information is there! 😉

🏡 We are a foster based rescue.
We do not have a shelter where all the dogs and puppies are together. Every dog is living in a private foster home, often in completely different areas. Some of our puppies may be 3+ hours apart from each other.

We completely understand wanting to meet multiple puppies before deciding. But unfortunately, we cannot hold up one puppy’s adoption while someone decides whether they might prefer another puppy several hours away.

So, how does the adoption process work?

1️⃣ Apply
Submit an adoption application for the dog you are seriously interested in.

2️⃣ We reach out by email
Our adoption team will review your application and contact you by email.

3️⃣ Vet reference
With your consent, we contact your veterinarian for a reference.

4️⃣ Phone interview 📞
We’ll chat with you about your lifestyle, experience, home and what you’re looking for in a dog.

5️⃣ Home visit 🏡
We complete a home visit to make sure everything is a good fit.

6️⃣ Approval → Meet the puppy! 🐶❤️
Once you’ve completed the process and are approved, then you get the opportunity to meet the puppy before making the final commitment to adopt.

Yes, you absolutely get to meet the dog before committing! We just don’t do random meet and greets before an application has been submitted and approved, unless we have a public meet and greet event planned.

This policy exists to protect our foster families, their privacy, and our dogs. Unfortunately, we have had people who were not approved for adoption continue to harass fosters and even show up at their homes. That is something we simply cannot risk.

If you’re approved and realize another puppy may be a better fit, you can ask about meeting them as well, provided they don’t already have an application in progress.

And one important thing to remember: some puppies receive significantly more applications than others. If you apply for a puppy who already has many applications and aren’t actually sure you want that puppy, it makes it very difficult for us to decide which application should move forward.

So please help us help you. ❤️

Save your time. Save our volunteers’ time. And most importantly, only submit an application if you are genuinely serious about bringing that dog home.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience. We are volunteers trying our very best to find the right homes for every single one of these deserving dogs. 💙

Baxter / Male / 10 Weeks / Shepherd Mix / Dogs: Yes / Cats: Yes / Kids: Yes / Location: Hamilton 📍

If you’re looking for a playful, curious, affectionate goofball with a serious talent for finding the best spot in the house, Baxter might be your guy! ❤️

Baxter is a total love bug with soulful eyes and a personality that will have you laughing one minute and cuddling him the next. He loves exploring, checking out every nook and cranny, and following his people around. When something is new or a little scary, he looks to his humans for reassurance, and that sweet face makes him pretty hard to resist!

Baxter LOVES to play, especially with noisy toys. Crinkles, squeaks and bells? Sign him up! 🧸

He also absolutely adores cats. He has a 3-year-old tabby foster sibling who tolerates his attempts to turn the house into a racetrack. 😂 Baxter is still learning that not every cat wants to play, but he’s having a great time trying!

When he’s not playing, Baxter is a professional cool-spot finder. A shady spot? Excellent. An A/C vent? Perfection. 😎

He’s also quite the dreamer, often running his little paws and making tiny barks in his sleep as he chases imaginary animals. And water? Let’s just say Baxter is convinced he could personally drink the Great Lakes dry. 😂

Baxter is a sweet, affectionate, funny little guy who wants to explore the world, be part of the action and stay close to his people. He’d thrive with a family ready for puppy antics, playtime, training and lots of love.

Baxter will be neutered at 6 months through one of our approved veterinary partners, included in his adoption fee.

Think Baxter might be your guy? ❤️

Rusty / Female / 10 Weeks / Shepherd Mix / Dogs: Yes / Cats: Yes / Kids: Yes / Location: Oshawa 📍

🐾 Meet Rusty, professional belly rub enthusiast, part-time couch potato, and fulltime sweetheart! ❤️

Rusty is another one of the adorable shepherd siblings who made her way to us from Attawapiskat, and this girl is ALL about the love!

Her favourite things include belly rubs, following her humans around, and staying close to her people. She loves a good nap on her back, absolutely adores her Goose plush toy, and is always happy to hop in the car for an adventure. She also loves playing chase with her foster sibling and being part of whatever her family is doing. 🥰

This girl is a total love bug. She is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and good natured. Rusty is also food motivated and eager to please, which is definitely a bonus when it comes to learning and training!

Rusty is a mid level energy pup who also scores pretty well on the couch potato scale. 😂 Of course, we can’t predict exactly where she’ll land as an adult, but so far she doesn’t seem like a super high needs puppy.

If you’re looking for a sweet little shadow who will follow you around, flop over for belly rubs, and happily keep you company wherever you go… Rusty would like to submit her application. 😂❤️

Rusty will be spayed at 6 months of age at one of our approved veterinary clinics, with the cost included in her adoption fee.

Could this sweet girl be your new best friend?

✨ HALFWAY HOME K9 ALUMNI — WE NEED YOUR NORTHERN PET’S PHOTO! ✨

Flights for Hope is building their 2027 Calendar. This calendar celebrates the incredible journeys of northern dogs who made it out of remote communities and into loving homes — including yours.

Many of the flights that bring these dogs south are funded directly by Flights for Hope, covering the cost of transporting animals from remote northern communities where access to vet care, supplies, and adoption opportunities is extremely limited. Featuring HHK9 alumni in their calendar helps highlight the impact of those flights and the life‑changing outcomes they create.

📸 Photo Requirements

-high quality landscape format
-no people included, just dogs
-subject MUST be a rescued dog

💌 How to Submit
Photos must be emailed to [email protected] with the subject CALENDAR.

Your alumni pups represent exactly why these flights matter — from remote northern communities to safe, happy homes. We can’t wait to see your beautiful submissions and cheer on our HHK9 family in the 2027 calendar.

🐾☆ NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR OUR 2027 FLIGHTS FOR HOPE RESCUE DOG CALENDAR ☆🐾

☆Each dog that is chosen will be placed in their featured month along with a little blurb about their rescue, so please include their story and where they were adopted from in your email.☆

Our focus for 2027 will be on selecting CANADIAN 🇨🇦 NORTHERN dogs as we really want them to SHINE so we can help raise awareness through their beautiful images & stories.

TIP: Have a rescue dog and don't have a camera? I recommend that you take your dog outside and try to take some close up still images with your dog looking at you using your cell phone (and assistant with a treat is an asset!). Remember, must be landscape format so turn your cell phone sideways!

Our calendar is our biggest yearly fundraiser. We need some cute models to help make it a success!!

Leo / Male / 10 Weeks / Shepherd Mix / Dogs: Yes / Cats: Yes / Kids: Yes / Location: Princeton 📍

If you thought his shepherd siblings were cute, just wait until you meet Leo! 😍 He’s their brother and is every bit as adorable, sweet, and lovable.

Leo is a happy, affectionate little guy who thinks everyone is his friend. He absolutely loves kids, dogs, and cats! He does like to chase the cats, but in true puppy fashion, he’s really just trying to convince them to play with him while he learns those important puppy manners. 😂

Outside, Leo loves trying to keep up with the big dogs, playing with his toys, and hanging out watching the chickens in their run. And when it’s time for an adventure? Leo is always ready to hop in the car! One of his favourite outings is going to pick up his four year old best friend from school. 🥹❤️

But as much as Leo loves to play, he’s also a serious cuddle bug. He wants to be wherever his people are and is happiest just hanging out in the same room with his family. When playtime is over, you’ll find him curled up in his bed, enjoying a nice long puppy nap.

Leo is a quick learner and is currently working hard on his crate training and potty training. He’s playful, affectionate, curious, and eager to please, basically everything you could hope for in a puppy! 🐶💙

Leo will be neutered at 6 months of age at one of our approved veterinary clinics, and this is included in his adoption fee.

This handsome boy is ready to find his forever family. Could that family be yours? 🥰

Leda / Female / 10 Weeks / Shepherd Mix / Dogs: Yes / Cats: Yes / Kids: Yes / Location: York 📍

Leda is Kavik’s sister, and this sweet little girl is ready to find her forever family! ❤️

Leda loves soft toys, her big foster sister, other dogs, and finding cozy little enclosed places to hang out. Her favourite spot? Under her foster mom’s desk while she works. 😂 She just wants to be wherever her people are!

She’s curious, good-natured, playful, and has such a gentle, friendly personality. We think she’ll do wonderfully in a home with kids and would love having other dogs to play with too.

Most of all, Leda loves her people and prefers to stay close by. She’s a little lovebug who wants nothing more than to be part of the family. 🥰

Leda will be spayed at 6 months of age at one of our approved veterinary clinics, and her spay is included in her adoption fee.

Could this sweet girl be the one you’ve been waiting for? 💕

🐾 MEET KAVIK! 🐾

This sweet little dude is from Attawapiskat and is just adorable as all get out! 🥰

Kavik is a total love bug who lives for cuddles and being close to his people. He’s happiest when he’s part of whatever is going on and will happily follow along as your little partner in crime. ❤️

When he’s not soaking up the cuddles, Kavik is all about playtime, especially when his plush toys are involved! 🧸 He’s also a curious and adventurous little guy who loves being outside, just like the true northern dog he is.

He’s a good natured, happy boy with a whole lot of love to give. Basically, if you’re looking for a best buddy who wants to do life right by your side, Kavik might just be your guy! 💙

Kavik will be neutered at 6 months of age at one of our approved veterinary clinics, and his neuter is included in his adoption fee.

Apply to adopt this handsome boy!

🐾 FOSTER FRIDAY IS BACK! 🐾

Way back in 2024, we started Foster Fridays, introducing you to the amazing foster families behind our dogs. ❤️ Eventually, we ran out of foster families to feature 😂 so Foster Friday took a little hiatus. But a couple of years later, we have lots of fresh faces around here, so it’s time to bring it back!

We’re kicking things off with Colleen, Elena & Gabriel! ❤️🐶

This family is often one of the first stops our pups make when they arrive in Timmins. They pick them up fresh off the plane and care for them while they wait for ground transport south, anywhere from 1–6 nights!

Basically, they’re the airport pickup crew, sleepover crew, puppy daycare, cleanup crew, snack providers and professional puppy snugglers all rolled into one. 😂

We asked them about their fostering journey:

🐾 HOW IT STARTED:
They began volunteering with the Timmins Humane Society before helping Northern Rescue Drivers shuttle pups south. About 1.5–2 years ago, they started fostering pups from Attawapiskat, becoming a safe first stop for dogs just beginning their journey.

🐾 HOW MANY FOSTERS?
Their first group was the Blueberry Three, followed by pups including Springer, Gator, Bannock and our little, Zoe. ❤️ They’ve fostered so many they’ve officially lost count!

🐾 FAVOURITE PART?
“The puppy antics and snuggles! And knowing that the pups will find a forever home that loves them.”

🐾 FUNNIEST MEMORY?
Accidentally picking up TWO crates of puppies from the airport when only one was theirs. 😂
Their new rule? Count the puppies before leaving the airport!

🐾 WOULD THEY RECOMMEND FOSTERING?
“Helping them on their journey to safety and a happy home is one of the most rewarding things you can do.”

And we couldn’t agree more. ❤️

Those first few days matter. These pups arrive tired, dirty, hungry, confused and sometimes wondering what on earth is happening. 😂 Colleen, Elena & Gabriel give them soft beds, full bellies, loving hands and often, their first experience of a safe and loving home.

Thank you for opening your home over and over again and being such an important part of their journey south. We’re incredibly lucky to have you as part of the Halfway Home K9 family! ❤️

Foster Friday is officially BACK! Stay tuned for more of the amazing people behind the dogs you see on this page!

✨ Molly is looking FABULOUS! ✨

A huge thank you to Cha-Cha's pet services for squeezing Molly in this week and helping her get all freshened up! 🛁✂️ She’s looking great and feeling even beter! ❤️

We’re incredibly grateful for the amazing supporters and volunteers who donate their time, talents, and skills to help our rescue dogs feel their absolute best. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

🚨 A reminder about Molly: She is NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. Please do not submit an application for her at this time. Any applications submitted in advance will not be considered once she becomes available.

We’ll let you know when Molly is officially ready to find her forever home!
