Fun Fact:
Fluid therapy is one of the most important supportive treatments we provide for pets in need. Intravenous fluids can help correct dehydration, improve circulation, balance electrolytes, and give vital organs the support they need to function properly. For many patients, IV fluids make a significant difference in their recovery and overall well-being.

🔹 Recognizing Urinary Blockage in Pets 🔹

We recently treated a patient who presented with signs of a urinary blockage, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires urgent veterinary intervention. The patient responded well to treatment, including IV fluid therapy, and we’re pleased to report a full recovery.

Urinary blockages are most commonly seen in male cats, but can occur in both cats and dogs. Early recognition is crucial for a positive outcome.

Symptoms to watch for include:

- Straining to urinate with little or no output

- Frequent attempts to urinate

- Vocalizing or signs of discomfort when urinating

- Lethargy or hiding

- Vomiting

- Loss of appetite

- Excessive licking of the ge***al area

- Blood in the urine

If you notice any of these signs in your pet, please seek veterinary care immediately. Prompt treatment can be life-saving.

Your pet’s health is our priority, and we’re here when you need us.

We had the pleasure of welcoming a litter of Rottweiler puppies to the clinic this week for their puppy wellness exams and first set of vaccinations. They definitely kept us on our toes and brought a lot of joy to the team.

Early wellness visits are an important part of preventive care. These appointments allow us to check your puppy’s overall health, monitor their growth and development, and start their core vaccine series to protect against diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and adenovirus.

It is also a great opportunity to discuss nutrition, behavior, parasite prevention, and any questions you may have as your puppy grows.

If you have recently welcomed a new puppy into your home, we would love to help you get started on a healthy path. Call our team or book online to schedule your puppy’s exam.

Additional Information:

What is Parvovirus?

Canine parvovirus (parvo) is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral disease that affects dogs, especially puppies under six months of age. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, most commonly in the intestinal tract, leading to severe gastrointestinal illness.

Symptoms of parvo include:

-Vomiting

-Severe, often bloody diarrhea

-Lethargy

-Loss of appetite

-Fever or low body temperature

Because the virus damages the lining of the intestines, affected dogs can become severely dehydrated and are at high risk for sepsis and death if not treated promptly.

How is it spread?
Parvo is shed in large amounts in the f***s of infected dogs. It can survive in the environment for months, and even trace amounts of f***l matter on paws, shoes, or surfaces can be enough to infect another dog. This makes the virus incredibly resilient and dangerous, especially in areas with lots of dog traffic such as parks, kennels, and grooming facilities.

Prevention is key.
The most effective way to protect your dog from parvo is through vaccination. Puppies should begin their vaccine series at 6 to 8 weeks of age and continue every 3 to 4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, it is important to limit exposure to high-risk areas.

If you have questions about parvo or need to schedule your puppy’s vaccine series, give us a call. Early protection saves lives.

Today at Mission Veterinary Hospital, we’d like to introduce you to Dewdney!
A feline patient who recently came to us showing signs of illness. His owners reported vomiting, lethargy, inappropriate urination, and noticeable straining in the litter box. On physical examination, his abdomen was firm and painful.

Diagnostic imaging and bloodwork helped us diagnose Dewdney with megacolon, a condition in which the colon becomes enlarged and loses its ability to contract and move stool effectively. As a result, stool builds up in the colon, leading to chronic constipation or even complete obstruction. This can be extremely uncomfortable and, if left untreated, may become life-threatening.

Common clinical signs of megacolon in cats include:
• Straining to defecate
• Infrequent or absent bowel movements
• Vomiting
• Lethargy or hiding
• Decreased appetite
• A painful or distended abdomen

Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition and may include hydration, stool softeners, dietary changes, or surgical intervention in advanced cases. Dewdney is now receiving medical management and supportive care, and we are encouraged by his progress.

Megacolon can be a chronic condition, but early diagnosis and consistent care can significantly improve quality of life. If your cat is showing any of these signs, we recommend seeking veterinary attention promptly.

We’re proud of Dewdney’s family for acting quickly, and we look forward to seeing him continue on the road to recovery.
