🎁🎄Christmas came early for this horse!🎄🎁

This mare was previously diagnosed with arthritis so her amazing owner gave her the best early Christmas present any horse could ask for, pain free joints going into the new year!

The Oak Ridges Equine Vet team went out to administer an incredible product called Pro-Stride APS into her hock joints and her coffin joints!

Pro-Stride is a product made from a horse's own blood. The blood is spun down using a special kit and it becomes separated into 2 parts. The first part contains the Autologous Protein Serum Pro-Stride product which is a concentration of the horse's cells, platelets, growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins! The other part is called platelet poor plasma which we also use to inject joints as it also contains amazing anti-inflammatory properties!

Check out the photo and videos below! In the photo, the syringes of red yield are the Pro-Stride and the syringes of yellow yield are the platelet poor plasma

In the first video Dr. Pope injecting the Pro-Stride product into this mare's hock! The second video shows Dr. Pope injecting the platelet poor plasma into her coffin joint! Notice when the needle is first inserted you can see some liquid dripping out, that is excess joint fluid which builds up with severe inflammation.

If you want to learn more about this incredible product or think your horse might be a candidate, contact us today to speak with one of our team members!

❄️ Winter Safety Reminder: Slips Aren’t Just Clumsy Moments ❄️

Winter conditions can significantly increase slip and fall risks for horses — especially around icy paddocks, laneways, trailers, and barn entrances.

Even a small slip can strain:
• Tendons & ligaments
• Joints
• Backs & necks
• Or aggravate underlying lameness or neurologic issues

⚠️ Watch for warning signs after a slip:

Stiffness or shortened stride

Reluctance to turn or pick up feet

Subtle lameness or uneven movement

Changes in attitude or performance

🧊 Winter safety tips to reduce risk:

Sand or gravel icy walkways and high-traffic areas

Keep paddocks well-drained and cleared where possible

Use appropriate winter hoof care and traction when needed

Move horses slowly and deliberately — no rushing

If your horse slips or seems “off” afterward, don’t ignore it. Early assessment can prevent minor issues from becoming major injuries.

🐴 Is Your Horse Tripping or Falling? It’s NOT Normal.

If you’ve noticed your horse stumbling, dragging toes, losing balance, or even falling, it’s important not to brush it off. While an occasional misstep can happen, consistent tripping or unsteadiness is often a sign of an underlying neurological issue.

Neurological problems can affect a horse’s coordination, strength, and awareness of where their feet are—making early recognition incredibly important. Common causes include spinal cord compression, EPM, neck issues, or other conditions affecting the nervous system.

👉 If your horse is showing signs of unsteadiness, don’t wait. A veterinary assessment can help determine the cause and start the right treatment plan.

Your horse’s safety—and yours—depends on identifying the problem early.

If you’re concerned about your horse’s balance or mobility, feel free to reach out. We’re here to help keep them sound, safe, and performing their best. 💚🐎

X-ray guided joint injections - the future of precision joint care

Did you know that sometimes we use x-rays to improve the accuracy of joint injections?

On the image below a small white line has been circled, that white line is actually a needle in this horse's leg!

Here, Dr.Pope is using x-ray to check that she has inserted her needle directly into the joint cavity of this horse's pastern. By doing this she can ensure that she is injecting the medication exactly where its needed.

This means:
• More accurate treatments
• Improved comfort for your horse
• Reduced risk of complications
• Better outcomes for joint health and performance

Whether your horse is an athlete or a beloved partner, targeted joint therapy can make all the difference in mobility and comfort.

💥 Shockwave Therapy for Horses: What It Is & How It Helps 💥

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment used to support healing in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions in horses. It delivers high-energy sound waves to targeted areas, stimulating the body’s natural repair processes.

✨ How Shockwave Helps:

Promotes blood flow and tissue regeneration

Speeds up healing of tendons and ligaments

Helps manage chronic pain and inflammation

Improves overall comfort and performance

📌 Common Conditions Treated:

Tendon and suspensory injuries

Back pain or kissing spine

Bone bruises

Arthritis-related discomfort

Sacroiliac pain

🐴 What to Expect During Treatment:

We typically start with 3 treatments, 1 week apart

Sessions are quick, usually 10–20 minutes

Most often treatment is done with the horse fully awake and aware but sedation can be used for horses that might be a bit more worried

Shockwave is a great option for both active performance horses and companions recovering from injury. If you're wondering whether this therapy might benefit your horse, feel free to reach out—we’re always happy to chat about treatment options.

Dr. Pope is excited to be returning to see cases again on July 3rd! She has immensely enjoyed time with her daughter over the last few months and will now take on the new adventure of balancing practice and family life.

We want to thank all of our WONDERFUL clients for their patience and loyalty during her maternity leave and are thrilled to continue to care for your equine athletes and riding partners!

With her return we are now booking acupuncture, electroacupuncture and aquapuncture services starting July 3rd in addition to all of our regular lameness and sports medicine services. Dr. Pope is not yet offering Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (aka equine chiropractic) services, we will announce when she is back to adjusting horses in the near future. We still have the lovely Dr. Sarah Campbell adjusting our equine patients in the meantime, contact us for bookings availability.

Dr. Rob Berger will still be available for limited bookings in July and August! We are so grateful to have him on our team and for his hard work while Dr. Pope was off.

The biggest thanks goes out to Louise who is the heart of our practice and keeps things running smoothly. Contact Louise to book with Dr. Pope for early July at [email protected] or call 705 932 0773.
